An anatomy of urbanization in sub-Saharan Africa
This paper analyzes urbanization patterns across Sub-Saharan Africa circa 2015 using a dartboard algorithm and high-resolution gridded population data to delineate urban areas and urban cores, cities and their population centers, and towns. Key empirical regularities are presented regarding urban hierarchies and internal city structures. Urbanization rates often exceed official ones and vary considerably across countries from 29.4% in Gabon to 78…

Peer Effects in Academic Research: Senders and Receivers
Using an instrument based on a national contest in France determining researchers’ location, we find evidence of peer effects in academia, when focusing on precise groups of senders (producing the spillovers) and receivers (benefiting from the spillovers), defined based on field of specialisation, gender and age. These peer effects are present even outside formal co-authorship relationships. Furthermore, the match between the characteristics of s…

The Costs of Agglomeration: House and Land Prices in French Cities
We develop a new methodology to estimate the elasticity of urban costs with respect to city population using French house and land price data. After handling a number of estimation concerns, we find that the elasticity of urban costs increases with city population with an estimate of about 0.03 for an urban area with 100,000 inhabitants to 0.08 for an urban area of the size of Paris. Our approach also yields a number of intermediate outputs of in…

Customer Discrimination and Employment Outcomes: Theory and Evidence from the French Labor Market
The paper investigates the link between the overexposure of African immigrants to unemployment in France and their underrepresentation in jobs in contact with customers. We build a two-sector matching model with ethnic sector–specific preferences, economy-wide employer discrimination, and customer discrimination in jobs in contact with customers. The outcomes of the model allow us to build a test of ethnic discrimination in general and customer d…

Product Complexity, Quality of Institutions and the Protrade Effect of Immigrants
The paper assesses the trade‐creating impact of foreign‐born residents on the international imports and exports of the French regions where they are settled. The protrade effect of immigrants is investigated along two intertwined dimensions: the complexity of traded goods and the quality of institutions in partner countries. The trade‐enhancing impact of immigrants is, on average, more salient when they come from a country with weak institutions.…

Transport costs: Measures, determinants, and regional policy implications for France
We develop a methodology to accurately compute transport costs. Based on the real transport network, our measure encompasses the characteristics of infrastructure, vehicle and energy used, as well as labor, insurance, tax and general charges borne by transport carriers. Computed for the 341 French employment areas, road transport shipments and the period 1978–1998, this new measure is compared to alternative ones such as great circle distance, re…

Climatic information from δ13C in plants by combining statistical and mechanistic approaches
The approach commonly used to assess the potential for climate reconstruction is to use linear regressions to compare the isotopic signal stored in archives to instrumental climatic data sets. A new method is proposed that combines statistical and mechanistic approaches to extract climatic information from δ 13 C records in organic matter. Both a spatial and a temporal gradient of 13 C discrimination in a moss species commonly found in temperate …

The Geography of Unemployment of First and Second-generation Africans in France: 1) Customer Discrimination in Face-to-face Jobs. It is well-known that the unemployment rate differential between people of foreign and French origins has increased over the past decades. This statement must be completed by two key features. First, the unemployment rate differential is considerably higher in large cities than in small ones. Second, this geographic du…
Pourquoi une si faible mobilité résidentielle
The Geography of Unemployment of First and Second-generation Africans in France: 2) Why such a Low Residential Mobility ? We use the French Housing Survey and analyze the residential mobility of people of African origins. We show that African people are overrepresented in large cities with respect to the rest of the population. We highlight two key factors behind this statement: the geographic concentration of social housing in dense areas and et…
