  • Phenoscreening

Open Access•Colleen Doyle, Colleen M Doyle et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2021

BACKGROUND: To advance early identification efforts, we must detect and characterize neurodevelopmental sequelae of risk among population-based samples early in development. However, variability across the typical-to-atypical continuum and heterogeneity within and across early emerging psychiatric/neurodevelopmental disorders represent fundamental challenges to overcome. Identifying multidimensionally determined profiles of risk, agnostic to DSM …

  • Urban Elementary Single-Sex Math Classrooms

    Open Access•Anica Bowe, Anica G Bowe et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 55

This study utilized a mixed-methods approach to holistically examine single-sex and coeducational urban elementary mathematics classes through situated cognitive theory. Participants came from two urban low-income Midwestern elementary schools with a high representation of minority students ( n = 77 sixth graders, n = 4 teachers, n = 2 principals). Findings demonstrate that African American girls made more math achievement gains in single-sex cla…

  • Academic Achievement Trajectories of Homeless and Highly Mobile Students

Open Access•J J Cutuli, Christopher David Desjardins et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2013

Analyses examined academic achievement data across third through eighth grades (N = 26,474), comparing students identified as homeless or highly mobile (HHM) with other students in the federal free meal program (FM), reduced price meals (RM), or neither (General). Achievement was lower as a function of rising risk status (General > RM > FM > HHM). Achievement gaps appeared stable or widened between HHM students and lower risk groups. Math and rea…

  • Executive Function Skills and School Success in Young Children Experiencing Homelessness

    Open Access•Ann S Masten, Janette E Herbers et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2012•Cited by: 26•References: 35

The authors examined the role of executive function (EF) skills as a predictor of kindergarten or first-grade adjustment in 138 children living in shelters for homeless families. During the summer, children completed a battery of six EF tasks and three IQ measures. Teachers later rated children’s school adjustment in five domains of achievement and social conduct. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the construct validity of EF as distinct fro…
