Reconstructing early modern religious lives
When the first readers of L’Histoire de la vie et moeurs de Marie Tessonnière (1650) turned past the title page, what did they hope to find? The text is described at the beginning of the dedicatory epistle as “Cét ouvrage de Devotion” (de la Riviere a2), signalling that the work was intended to provide spiritual guidance for the reader as well as offering a record of the life of Tessonnière herself. In its dual purpose, this was a very typical re…
The colours of love
Romantic love involves peculiar psychological and neural processes that are closely connected with autonomic-visceral changes. The present study aimed at investigating the thermal response associated to the love induction task. The facial thermal imprints of forty-four people who were in love and in romantic relationships at the time of the experiment were recorded. Thermal signals were extracted from six regions of interest (ROIs), positioned on…

Early Modern Confraternities in Europe and the Americas
The contributions to this volume derive from the Annual Meeting of the Renaissance Society of America, held in Toronto in March 2003; on that occasion, scholars reflected upon ‘Recent Trends in Confraternity Studies’ in a plenary session, while papers were offered to illustrate specific advances in research. The present collection therefore reflects the renewed activity in the field of medieval and early modern confraternities, an interest in whi…
Preserving action within the cloister : The compromise of the Toulouse Ursulines, 1604-1616 In 1604, the Ursuline congregation of Toulouse refused the monastic model to focus upon the catechising of local girls. Yet, in 1609, the "congrégées" decided to become cloistered nuns. What led them to this seemingly paradoxical decision ? At a time when their female apostolic mission was a stake, the Ursulines embraced claustration as a means to preserve…
Between the Cloister and the World
In 1609 the Ursuline congrégées of Toulouse sent a representative to Rome, requesting the elevation of their lay congregation into an enclosed convent. This decision may initially seem paradoxical, since the establishment had been founded specifically in order to educate and catechize the female population of the city across a wide social spectrum. Since congrégées, unlike traditional nuns, were not subject to monastic enclosure, they could teach…
