  • Scots in England in the Fifteenth Century

    Open Access•J A F Thomson, John Arthur Thomson•ARTICLE•Scottish historical review/ The…•2000

In the description of Scotland in his Commentaries, Pope Pius II, who had visited the country as an envoy for the Council of Basel in the 1430s, wrote, There is nothing the Scotch like better to hear than abuse of the English'.1 In view of the continual hostilities between the two countries for over a century, this is hardly surprising, but it is important to remem ber that this was only one side of the story. Despite the conflicts, there were ar…

  • St Eiluned of Brecon and her Cult

    Open Access•John A F Thomson, John Arthur Thomson•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1993•References: 2

THE cult of St Eiluned is much more fully documented than the Saint herself, being described in two sources, of the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. These must therefore be the starting-point for an investigation both into the Saint’s historicity, which is at best dubious, and into the significance of the cult, which throws light on religious practices over a very lengthy period. Aspects of these practices, and comparisons with other cults elsewh…

  • John Foxe and some Sources for Lollard History

    Open Access•J A F Thomson, John Arthur Thomson•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1965•References: 1

Of all the early but non-contemporary works which throw light on the history of Lollardy, the Acts and Monuments of John Foxe is undoubtedly the most important. Although it contains many tendentious comments, the products of an age when religious passions burned fiercely, comments which are of greater value to the historian of sixteenth-century propaganda than to the student of fifteenth-century heresy, it would be unwise to reject its source-val…
