A multi‐country analysis of austerity policies in the European Union
We analyse the global effects from the austerity policies recently implemented in the EU, by developing an extension of the GTAP general equilibrium model. The extended model incorporates a new specification of the trade balance (i.e. endogenous), the labour market (i.e. unemployment under a wage curve framework) and the public sector (i.e. split from the representative national agent, with endogenous expenditure and savings). Three alternative p…
The Current Account of the Spanish Economy, 1850-2016
We analyse the possible optimality of the path followed by the current account of the Spanish economy over a very long period of almost 170 years (1850-2016), according to the intertemporal approach to the current account and using a present-value model. In particular, from the estimation of a bivariate vector autoregression model for the current account, we attempt to assess the extent to which the latter has been used to smooth private consumpt…

Foreign Direct Investment and Regional Growth
Bajo-Rubio O., Díaz-Mora C. and Díaz-Roldán C. Foreign direct investment and regional growth: an analysis of the Spanish case, Regional Studies. The massive increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows following the Spanish integration with the now European Union in 1986 has been one of the most important features shaping the behaviour of the Spanish economy in the last 20 years. This paper assesses the impact of foreign direct investment …
Optimal endowments of public capital
Bajo‐Rubio O. and Díaz‐Roldán C. (2005) Optimal endowments of public capital: an empirical analysis for the Spanish regions, Regional Studies 39 , 297–304. Regional infrastructure policies, through increased public investment, are widely used to promote the development of poorer regions in European countries. This paper tries to find some evidence on the optimality in the provision of government capital for the case of the Spanish regions, 1965–9…
Reducing Social Contributions for Unskilled Labor as a Way of Fighting Unemployment
We provide an empirical evaluation of the effects of a cut in social security contributions (i) for all types of labor and (ii) only for unskilled labor, within a computable generalequilibrium model simulation of the Spanish economy. The model allows firms to follow a noncompetitive price rule, and incorporates an equal-yield assumption, which means that the reduction in social security contributions is compensated with an increase in value-added…
