  • Te Kōputu o Te Whakatōhea: A Tikanga of Gathering and Sharing to Guide Future Kai Sovereignty

Open Access•Shannon Davis, Richard Morris et al.•ARTICLE•MAI Journal A New Zealand Journal…•2026

The story of Te Whakatōhea is indistinguishable from its relationship with kai. Starting with the iwi’s migration narratives from Hawaiki to Aotearoa New Zealand, through an economic flourishing that followed initial contact with European settlers, then as a matter of survival following raupatu, kai has been an integral component of Te Whakatōhea culture and tikanga. Today this relationship with kai is manifest in the industry-leading aquaculture…

  • Strategic Spatial Opportunities for Local Food Distribution: Urban Accessibility of Community Gardens in Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand

Open Access•Andreas Wesener, Shannon Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Planning•2025

This study explores strategic opportunities for improving access to and distribution of locally produced food. Food consumption in urban areas often depends on long and distant supply chains and corporate distribution points such as supermarkets. Poor integration of local urban food production is a source of food insecurity as much as an ecological, social, and infrastructural problem. It creates pressures on the supply and logistics of food dist…

  • Measuring the Performance of the Built Environment: An Investigation of Evaluation Methods

Open Access•Guanyu Chen, Jacky Bowring et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2025

As landscape architecture shifts toward evidence-based practices, the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF)’s Case Study Investigation (CSI) initiative has been instrumental in driving the growth of Landscape Performance Evaluation (LPE) and enhancing disciplinary rigour. This paper reflects on our CSI case study, evaluating Te Whāriki, a master-planned residential landscape in New Zealand. We adopt a methodological reflexivity approach, critic…

  • Towards a Unified Currency for Landscape Performance Evaluation: A New Zealand Case

    Open Access•Guanyu Chen, David Dyason et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2025•References: 7

Landscape Performance Evaluation (LPE) practices have made significant progress over the past decade. However, challenges persist in comparing landscape benefits and conducting cost–benefit analyses for decision-making. This paper introduces a “universal currency” for comparing landscape benefits and weighing them against costs. Employing a revealed-preference approach, this study quantifies the perceived benefits of public open spaces in a fast-…

  • Spatial opportunities at the rural-urban fringe: Balancing urban growth, food production and ecology

    Open Access•Marcus Robinson, Jacky Bowring et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2025•References: 45

Urban expansion at the rural-urban fringe is driving loss of productive agricultural land, biodiversity and ecosystem services. This phenomenon is underpinned by Western society’s evolving conceptual and spatial distinctions between food production, nature, and the city. With particular relevance for the Anglosphere, this narrative review explores how these competing interests can be negotiated spatially. First, we give an overview of urban utopi…

  • Monuments and feminist activism: Queen Isabel la Católica and Virgen Barbie in La Paz

    Open Access•Yeimy Walker, Jacky Bowring et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2025•References: 8

Monuments are significant sites of contestation where conflicting narratives are expressed through interventions such as graffiti, defacement, and destruction. This study investigates the Isabel la Católica monument and the Virgen (Virgin) Barbie in La Paz, Bolivia, focusing on how the anarcha-feminist collective Mujeres Creando uses creative interventions to challenge patriarchal and colonial narratives. Their actions, including graffiti, statue…

How easily a new faculty members adjusts and adapts to life in the professoriate is often dependent on the types of relationships that the newcomer establishes with colleagues and on the willingness of veteran faculty members to assist newcomers as they learn the ins and outs of the academy. • Political Science: Keds—A Program for the Machine Coding of Event Data

    Open Access•Philip A Schrodt, Shannon G Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•1994•Cited by: 26•References: 7

This paper describes in technical detail the Kansas Event Data System ( KEDS) and summarizes our experience in coding Reuters data for the Middle East. The components of KEDS are first described; this discussion is intended to provide sufficient detail about the program that one could develop a more sophisticated machine-coding system based on our research. We then discuss a number of problems we have encountered in machine coding, focusing on th…
