  • The Colonial Endeavours of the Duchy of Courland, 1642–1698

    Open Access•John P Freeman•ARTICLE•German History•2025

The scope of German colonialism has fluctuated as perceptions about what it is to be a participant in colonialism have changed. Recent re-evaluations place German actors firmly within the early modern Atlantic world. Scholars have increasingly noted German investments in the slave trade, the exhibition of people of colour at German courts, and the presence of Germans in foreign colonies, to name some examples. One aspect of colonialism and the Ge…

  • The struggle for neutrality

    Open Access•John P Freeman•ARTICLE•Atlantic Studies•2021•References: 11

The strategy of neutrality has long been referenced in terms of the Duchy of Courland’s dealings with its belligerent neighbours during the seventeenth century. This position was formed in response to Courland’s lack of agency and desire for greater independence amidst eastern Baltic power struggles. However, Courland’s activities were not limited to this locality, expanding under Duke Jakob (ruled 1642–1682) to continental trade and Atlantic col…

  • Code Poetry in Motion

    Open Access•John Freeman, John P Freeman•ARTICLE•Postmodern Culture•2019

This essay argues E. E. Cummings's "r-p-o-p-h-e-s-s-a-g-r" (1935) anticipates the contemporary practice of experimental writing known as codework. Encoding through typographical means the action sequence of the grasshopper's leap, Cummings transformed his mechanical typewriter into the equivalent of a hardware device supplied with the necessary software for running the poem as a program. The three permutations of "grasshopper"—"r-p-o-p-h-e-s-s-a-…

  • Inequalities in the spiritual health of young Canadians

Open Access•Valerie Michaelson, John Freeman et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Study findings highlight potential inequalities in the spiritual health of young Canadians, as well as opportunities for methodological advances in the assessment of adolescent spiritual health in our population

  • Trying Not to Lie…and Failing

    Open Access•John Freeman, John P Freeman•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2015

All research is experiential, whether this is the experience of reading in the library or observing in the field. Autoethnographers take experience into narratives and are themselves key participants in their research, and often also its subject. For autoethnographers the idea of research as a neutral process is abandoned in favour of a self-reflective form that explores the researcher's perspective on the subject in question. Autoethnography ine…

  • Cross-National Measurement Invariance of the Teacher and Classmate Support Scale

    Open Access•Torbjorn Torsheim, Oddrun Samdal et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2010•Cited by: 12•References: 2

The cross-national measurement invariance of the teacher and classmate support scale was assessed in a study of 23202 Grade 8 and 10 students from Austria, Canada, England, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, and Slovenia, participating in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) 2001/2002 study. A multi-group means and covariance analysis supported configural and metric invariance across countries, but not full scalar equivalence. The composit…

  • The Steorn Exploit and its Spin Doktors , or “ Synergie ist der name of das Spiel , my boy!”

    Open Access•John Freeman, John P Freeman•ARTICLE•Postmodern Culture•2008

This essay considers one of the more intriguing techno-events of this decade: the claim of the Irish technology company Steorn to have produced a perpetual motion device, the Orbo. Although its promised demo in July 2007 failed to produce a working device, events leading up to and beyond the failed demo offer a case study in what Galloway and Thacker define as an “exploit,” “a resonant flaw designed to resist, threaten, and ultimately desert the …

  • First Insights

    Open Access•John Freeman, John P Freeman•ARTICLE•Arts and Humanities in Higher…•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 2

This article proposes an approach to teaching and learning in the university arts sector that is able to accommodate and assess creative process alongside practice. In arguing thus, romanticized notions of ‘the spontaneous artist’ are exposed to scrutiny, and the creative process itself is made subject to analysis. Notwithstanding its focus on the areas of theatre and performance, this article has a wide application to the field of developmental …

  • Where do organizational forms come from

    Open Access•Michael T Hannan, J H Freeman et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•1985•Cited by: 42•References: 14

Most theory and research on organizations assumes that the great diversity of organizational attributes reflects variation in implementation of a relatively small number of forms. Modern conceptions of organizational form concentrate on discontinuities in distributions of either attributes or relationships with other organizations. We argue that this approach be supplemented with an explicitly dynamic one that focuses on processes that create and…
