  • Fathers at work—Forfeits, deficits and disregarding discourse

Open Access•Jasmine Kelland, Nicola Searle et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 18

Existing research observes that fathers navigate the workplace through a complex network of mistreatment, adopting “ground breaker discourse” as a mechanism by which to maintain alignment with masculine norms to reduce mistreatment. Through analysis of online forum comments in response to a UK newspaper article exploring fathers and masculinity, this research investigates if “fatherhood forfeits” and the “patriarchal deficit” are evident in this …

  • Colonialism, Capitalism and Racism: A Postcolonial Chronicle of Dutch and Belgian Practice

    Open Access•Jan Breman, Andy Brown•BOOK•Colonialism, Capitalism and Racism•2024•References: 26

For a long time, Europe's colonizing powers justified their urge for expansion with the conviction that they were 'bringing civilization to territories where civilization was lacking.' This doctrine of white superiority and indigenous inferiority was accompanied by a boundless exploitation of local labor. Under colonial rule, the ideology that later became known as neoliberalism was free to subject labor to a capitalism tainted by racialized poli…

  • Political Languages of Race and the Politics of Exclusion

Sandy Brown, Andy R Brown et al.•BOOK•Political Languages of Race and…•2018

First published in 1999, Political Languages of Race and the Politics of Exclusion examines the post-race signification logic of languages used to promote and achieve the exclusion and stigmatisation of migrant groups within post-war Britain. Re-examining the time of Smethwick and Powellism, as well as extensive Parliamentary debates, this book develops an original thesis to show how Backbench racism became legitimated as Frontbench commons’ sens…

Andy Brown, Robert Stevens et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2013

Nonlinear forms of diagrammatic presentation, such as node-arc graphs, are a powerful and elegant means of visual information presentation. Although providing nonvisual access is now routine for many forms of linear information, it becomes more difficult as the structure of the information becomes increasingly nonlinear. An understanding of the ways in which graphs benefit sighted people, based on experiments and the literature, together with the…

  • The other day I met a constituent of mine: A Theory of Anecdotal Racism

Sandy Brown, Andy R Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•1999•Cited by: 6•References: 18

This article argues that the theoretical problem of the new racism thesis, as originally formulated in the 1980s, was the account of the discursive change it proposed and the role and significance of Powellism in this process. In offering a modification of the thesis I highlight the significance of the use of anecdotal accounts of the plight of ordinary English people in areas of black settlement as central to the re-articulation of racialized co…
