Beyond optimization
Debates on artificial general intelligence (AGI) often frame progress as a quantitative race toward human-level performance through scaling and optimization. This essay argues that such debates overlook a deeper asymmetry in design orientation between biological and artificial systems. Drawing on biological theory and recent discussions in AI & Society on embodiment, artificial abstraction, and distributed agency, I isolate redundancy as a struct…
Menopausal Symptoms, Perceived Workplace Openness and Work Productivity Among Japanese Women

Changes in seeking smoking cessation therapy among Japanese employees and their families
Our study showed that SCT uptake decreased sharply when HTPs were disseminated to all prefectures in Japan, and this downward trend continued thereafter. These findings are considered to result from the widespread adoption of HTP in the Japanese market, as these products were perceived to be less harmful than traditional cigarettes. Therefore, it is worrying that the widespread availability of HTP resulted in reduced smoking cessation behaviour a…
Association of health literacy with anxiety about Covid-19 under an infectious disease pandemic in Japan
We quantitatively analysed the relationship of health literacy with both anxiety about the COVID-19 outbreak and free-text qualitative data. It gauged the level of anxiety about COVID-19, assessed health literacy (HL) on both critical and communicative HL subscales, and invited free-text responses. We compared anxiety levels in three …

Do body mass index trajectories affect the risk of type 2 diabetes? A case–control study
The present study suggested that the pace of increasing BMIs is similar between Japanese diabetic patients and healthy individuals. The increasing BMI was not detected to independently affect the onset of type 2 diabetes
SP1-12 Relationship between sleep duration at 3 years of age and growth during childhood

This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep duration at 3 years of age and childhood weight status through a multi-level analysis. Methods The study population comprised children born between 1 April 1991, and 31 March 2003, in Koshu City, Japan, and who participated in a medical check-up at 3 years of age. Short and long…
P1-265 Effectiveness of smoking prevention programs for maternal and child health
Introduction Smoking is a very important risk factor for health including that of pregnant women. It can cause low birth weight babies and various maternal and child health problems. Though the number of municipalities which provide smoking prevention programs has been increasing, not all of them do so.
