  • Community and State in the Japanese Farm Village: Farm Tenancy Conciliation (1924-1938)

    Hiroshi Takahashi•ARTICLE•Social Science Japan Journal•2008

For the development of socio-legal studies in Japan, interest in agricultural problems has been of great significance. Suehiro Izutarō’s Nōson Hōritsu Mondai (1924) can be considered a foundational text in socio-legal studies in Japan, and many important socio-legal works have followed that share Suehiro's concern for agriculture and farm villages. For example, studies by Kainō Michitaka (1944), Kawashima Takeyoshi (1982 [1949]; 1982 [1954]; 1965…

  • An Integrated Computational Infrastructure for a Virtual Tokyo Concepts and Examples

Open Access•Steven Kraines, Steven B Kraines et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2001

The evaluation of tradeoffs between technologies and policies for mitigation of environmental problems requires a systematic investigation of effects over the entire region under consideration. When attempting to model such large complex systems, issues such as usability, maintenance, and computing efficiency often become major modeling barriers. In this work a software prototype for integrating the services of computational models over the Inter…

  • Modified formalin test: Characteristic biphasic pain response

Manabu Shibata, Tsuyako Ohkubo et al.•ARTICLE•Pain•1989

A modified formalin test in mice was investigated. The pain response curve induced by 0.5% formalin was biphasic, having 2 peaks, from 0 to 5 min (first phase) and from 15 to 20 min (second phase). A low concentration of formalin was used, allowing the effects of weak analgesics to be detected. Centrally acting drugs such as narcotics inhibited both phases equally. Peripherally acting drugs such as aspirin, oxyphenbutazone, hydrocortisone and dex…
