  • Spatial and temporal organic carbon burial along a fjord to coast transect

    Open Access•C J Duffield, CJ Duffield et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•References: 2

We investigated spatial and temporal changes in accumulation rate and source of organic carbon on a gradient along the Lysefjord and the more coastal Høgsfjord, Western Norway. This was achieved through analysis of total organic carbon and nitrogen content of sediment cores, which were radiometrically dated to the early 19th and 20th centuries for the Høgsfjord and Lysefjord, respectively. Benthic foraminifera (protists) were utilized to determin…

  • Sea ice and primary production proxies in surface sediments from a High Arctic Greenland fjord

    Open Access•Sofia Ribeiro, Mikael K Sejr et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 42

In order to establish a baseline for proxy-based reconstructions for the Young Sound-Tyrolerfjord system (Northeast Greenland), we analysed the spatial distribution of primary production and sea ice proxies in surface sediments from the fjord, against monitoring data from the Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring Programme. Clear spatial gradients in organic carbon and biogenic silica contents reflected marine influence, nutrient availability and river-…

  • On luminescence bleaching of tidal channel sediments

Mikkel Fruergaard, Morten Pejrup et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2015•References: 21

We investigate the processes responsible for bleaching of the quartz OSL signal from tidal channel sediment. Tidal dynamics are expected to play an important role for complete bleaching of tidal sediments. However, no studies have examined the amount of reworking occurring in tidal channels and on tidal flats due to the mixing caused by currents and waves. We apply bed level data to evaluate the amount of vertical sediment reworking in modern tid…

  • Stable isotopes in Sphagnum fuscum peat as late-Holocene climate proxies in northeastern European Russia

    Open Access•Päivi Kaislahti Tillman, Steffen Holzkämper et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 11

The environment of the northern taiga to tundra transition is highly sensitive to climate fluctuations. In this study from northeastern European Russia, stable carbon and oxygen isotope ratios (δ 13 C, δ 18 O) in α-cellulose of Sphagnum fuscum stems subsampled from hummocks and peat plateau profiles have been used as climate proxies. The entire isotope time series, dated by lead ( 210 Pb), caesium ( 137 Cs) and AMS-radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating, spa…

  • Fluctuations of sediment accumulation rates in front of an Arctic delta in Greenland

Open Access•Jørn Bjarke Torp Pedersen, Aart Kroon et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 7

An automated layer counting technique is developed to estimate the chronology of a marine sediment core and this technique is validated with Pb 210 chronology. The marine sediment core was sampled in front of the delta of Mittivakkat Glacier meltwater river in the Sermilik Fjord, SE Greenland, and is a proxy of the sediment delivery from a glacial drainage basin to a fjord. The estimated time series was based on automatic lamination detection (va…

  • Luminescence dating of Holocene sedimentary deposits on Rømø, a barrier island in the Wadden Sea, Denmark

    Open Access•A T Madsen, Andrew S Murray et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This study presents an Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) based chronology for the evolution of the barrier island Rømø and related back-barrier lagoon deposits in the Danish Wadden Sea. The chronology is constructed using 78 quartz OSL ages obtained using a Single Aliquot Regenerative dose (SAR) protocol; samples were retrieved from seven sediment cores, each up to 25 m long, taken from locations on the island and within the back-barrier la…
