Prospects for public participation in energy transitions in Canada: Householders' interests in hosting, coordinating, and trading electricity at the local level
In Canada, climate change and the rising cost of fossil fuel‐based energy are driving a transition to cleaner local energy systems—combining renewable energy, storage, and smart devices. While these technologies are important, without public support and participation, they will not ensure a just and sustainable transition. In this context, we analyze data from a nationally representative survey (n = 941) of Canadians’ views towards local energy s…
Energy democracy, public participation, and support for local energy system change in Canada
In the face of climate change and associated energy system change, there is a growing literature and more general recognition of the ‘four Ds’ (decarbonization, decentralization, digitalization, and democratization). Yet there has been very little quantitative work that analyzes public perceptions of these changes. Utilizing data from a Canada-wide, nationally representative survey (n = 941), this study conducted provincial and regional assessmen…

The socio-political context of energy storage transition: Insights from a media analysis of Chinese newspapers
The development of energy storage (ES) technology is essential for a sustainable energy transition; however, the socio-political context of ES tends to make its large-scale development challenging, which requires more attention. Given the role of media discourse in both reflecting and influencing such socio-technical processes, we initially analysed the national media representation of ES in China based on the Socio-Political Evaluation of Energy…

Wind Power in Ontario: Its Contribution to the Electricity Grid
The purpose of this article is to investigate wind turbine production, the variability of that production, and the relationship between output and system-wide demand. A review of the literature reveals that a variety of measures (and methods) to explore the variability of wind power production exist. Attention then turns to the province of Ontario (Canada), and the performances of four wind farms are examined for 2006 and 2007. Key conclusions in…

The Voluntary Adoption of Green Electricity By Ontario-Based Companies: The Importance of Organizational Values and Organizational Context
Organizational values and organizational context have been shown to influence the willingness of businesses to voluntarily adopt environmental initiatives. This study explores how these factors support the adoption of an initiative that is not associated with a clear “win-win” outcome for the firm. Using a matched-pair research method to establish a degree of pretest equivalence, the authors compare the organizational values and organizational st…
Global Governance and the Atmosphere
In Ozone Depletion and Climate Change, Matthew Hoffmann examines the “participation norms” that have developed for these two global environmental issues. In particular, he focuses attention upon the primary ways in which Northern and Southern countries have, collectively, taken part in the international negotiations that are creating regimes to deal with these issues. Specific attention is also paid to the strategies and actions of the United Sta…
The Development of Renewable Electricity Policy in the Province of Ontario: The Influence of Ideas and Timing
This article examines the development of policy to promote renewable electricity in the province of Ontario (Canada) between 1995 and 2006. Drawing upon both the role of ideas in policy development and a "multiple streams approach," it is argued that changes in the problem, policy, and politics streams-and their coupling by key political entrepreneurs-account for two significant shifts in Ontario's efforts to promote the increased use of renewabl…
Innovations to reduce residential energy use and carbon emissions: An integrated approach
Research in energy sustainability is gaining renewed priority because of the growing importance of climate‐change issues and the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by many countries. Increased energy efficiency and substitution of less carbon‐intensive fuels are proposed as the principal means to reduce greenhouse‐gas (GHG) emissions and associated climate change. The residential sector is an important area for improvement, as it accounts for 22 …
The Kyoto Protocol's 'Clean Development Mechanism: A sustainability assessment
The purpose of this article is to assess the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Drawing upon the literature on sustainable development and sustainability, the criteria for assessment consist of ecological, economic and social elements. Three key debates about the CDM are placed under investigation: proposals to clarify 'supplementarity' by capping the extent to which the CDM can be used to allow industrialised countries to meet t…
Mapping the prospects for regional co-operation in southern Africa
This article examines the prospects for regional co-operation in southern Africa. It does this by ‘mapping’ southern Africa—that is, by revealing the extent to which five key preconditions for effective and sustainable cooperation are present. These five preconditions—each of whose inclusion is justified in the article—are: the distribution of power, sufficient homogeneity, and adequate regional orientation at economic, political and sociocultura…
International fairness and justice in addressing global climate change
An important discussion is in progress on how a fair and efficient international agreement on climate change might be effectively realised among OECD countries. In contribution to that discussion, it can be shown that different rules for the allocation of future greenhouse gas emissions (themselves generated by different conceptions of ‘justice') envision widely disparate actions for the various OECD countries. In light of these differences, it c…

South Africa and Global Climate Change
Globalclimate change is now firmly on the international agenda. Although the heady days of the 1992 Earth Summit have been replaced by an atmosphere of greater caution, events in 1995 have nevertheless revealed that climate change is set to be one of the key international issues during the coming decades. Indeed, it is inevitable that global climate change - as both a physical phenomenon and a social institution - will have a tremendous impact on…
