Maternal Attitudes of Indian Women
Using the Hindi version of the Parental Attitude Research Instrument, this study compared the factorial structure of maternal attitudes of 320 mothers of boys and 320 mothers of girls residing in an urban setting in India. Principal component analyses with Varimax rotation revealed three factors for each group that were comparable, except for differences in the relative importance of factors
Parental Attitudes Among Rural Indian Women
Using the Hindi version of the Parental Attitude Research Instrument, this study investigated the factorial structure of parental attitudes of 100 rural Indian mothers. Principal component analysis with varimax rotation identified three factors: that is, democratic attitudes; authoritarian, suppressive, and restricting patterns; rejection of the maternal role and hostility toward husband and children. Results are compared with findings for Americ…
Family Environment and Multidimensional Locus of Control
Sixty-seven women and thirty-six men participated in a study of the relationships between selected family environment variables and Levenson's dimensions of locus of control (Personal Control, Powerful Others, Chance). Results indicated significant bivariate and semipartial associations between perceived family nurture and Personal Control. Significant bivariate correlations were found between Powerful Others and the respective measures of percei…
Intelligence, Gender, Social Maturity, and School Readiness in Dutch Firstgraders
One hundred and twenty five first-grade elementary school children (75 girls and 50 boys) took part in a study of the relationships among intelligence, gender, social maturity, and school readiness. Results indicated that school readiness is related to intelligence and sex but not to social maturity. The latter was found to be associated with sex of subject and intelligence
Repression-Sensitization and Multidimensional Locus of Control
Thirty-five men and 35 women participated in a study of the relationships among repression-sensitization and Levenson's three dimensions of perceived contingency (internal, powerful others, and chance). Results indicate moderate associations between sensitization and the two external orientations, but for men only. Male sensitizers tend to believe in chance control and control by powerful others. The relationship between sensitization and belief …
Attitudes of French-Canadian University Students toward Use of Condoms
164 French-Canadian university students took part in a study analyzing the factorial pattern of attitudes toward the use of condoms. A principal component analysis identified 7 factors, namely, positive general attitude toward use of condoms, contraceptive security, inhibition of sexual pleasure, inconvenience, embarrassment, responsibility, and lessening of physical pleasure
Flood Experience and Posttraumatic Trait Anxiety in Appalachia
114 men and women participated in a study which focused on the long-term effect on trait anxiety resulting from a severe flood which occurred in 1972 in Buffalo Creek, West Virginia. Analysis indicates that residents of Buffalo Creek, who did experience the devastating flood, after all these years tend to report higher trait anxiety than do residents of Kopperston who had not been subjected to such a disaster

Attitudes Toward Childrearing Among Indian Women
Using the Hindi version of the Parental Attitude Research Instrument, this investigation explored the factorial structure of attitudes toward childrearing of 320 Indian women. Principal component analysis with varimax rotation revealed three factors. These are: rejection of the maternal role and hostility toward husband and children; authoritatian, suppressive, and restricting control; and democratic attitudes. Results are compared with findings …
A Structural Analysis of Behavior Ratings by Teachers
Five factors consistently appear in behaviour ratings: extraversion or surgency, excitability-agreeableness, neuroticism or emotionality or emotional instability, superego strength or conscientiousness, and intellectual activity or culture. Using Cattell's reduced personality sphere, the behaviour ratings of 1,721 elementary school students by 47 first-grade and 47 sixth-grade teachers were analyzed. The analysis produced four of the five factors…
The Validity of Astrological Statements
Astrological reports contain statements about dispositions and behaviours of the individuals under consideration. Because astrologers base their reports on variables such as time and place of birth and not on personal observation or testing of their clients, one might regard these statements as predictions. The validity of such reports may be evaluated retroactively after the subjects have died, or longitudinally, or by comparing their content wi…
Factors in Perception of Tornado Hazard
142 subjects participated in a study of the relationship between selected predictors and responses to potential tornado hazard. Results of backstep regression analyses indicated (a) that sex of subject and level of education were the best predictors of perceived probability of tornado recurrence, (b) that ratings of severity of potential damage were related to level of education, and (c) that sex of subject accounted for a significant percentage …
Locus of Control, Mental Ability, Self-Esteem and Alienation
Fifty undergraduate students took part in an investigation of the relationship among locus of control, mental ability, self-esteem, and alienation. The results suggested that alienation is related to external locus of control and low self-esteem. No significant association was found for mental ability and alienation. The relationships among locus of control, mental ability, self-esteem, and the alienation subcomponents of powerlessness, normlessn…
Trait Anxiety, Perception of Potential Nuclear Hazard, and State Anxiety
89 residents of an area located near a designated nuclear site took part in an investigation of the relationship between trait-anxiety and perceptions of potential nuclear disaster and between such perceptions and state anxiety. No significant correlation was found between trait-anxiety and expectation of future accidents or between this measure of anxiety and estimation of potential damage. Expectation of an accident and estimation of damage wer…
Trait Anxiety and Response to Potential Flood Disaster
81 subjects participated in a study examining the relationship between trait-anxiety, as measured by the trait subscale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and perceptions of or responses to potential floodhazard, as evaluated by an objective questionnaire. In assessing these relationships the interactive effects of a number of relevant variables were investigated. Correlations suggested that trait-anxiety was negatively related to expectation …
