A rise of state activism in a competitive industry: The case of Russian retail trade law of 2009
The paper is aimed at exploring the Russian state return to the highly competitive industry of retail trade by adopting restrictive industry-specific legislation in 2009.We reveal a new precedent model of governance using the liberal rhetoric of the competition protection to justify intervention in interfirm contractual relations. We use survey data collected from 843 retailers and suppliers in 2013 to demonstrate that the new legislation had not…

Sociology of Markets: Methodology of Case Discussions
Economic Imperialists Attack! What Sociologists Should Do
Economists attack! The movement of economic imperialism comprises the systematic attempts of economic theory expansion into the nearby fields of social science. And this expansion is an indirect evidence for the internal crisis of economic theory [Guriev 2008]. Exit to external borders and revision of own assumptions go together in much sense supporting each other. But we believe that economists will manage to solve these problems themselves. We …

The database includes reports of the long-term participant observations (fourteen months) which were carried out on a daily basis by a group of sociologists in the queues at the sales offices of the most famous Russian ‘financial pyramids’ (‘MMM’ and others). Etacratism: Power and Property-evidence From the Soviet Experience
This paper is aiming to outline the fundamental features of the Soviet-type system from which the new transitional society is emerging. The Soviet-type system is categorised beyond the 'capitalism-socialism' alternative as a system of 'etacratism' in which all social and economic relationships are subordinated to the structures of political power. Characteristics reminiscent of the 'Asiatic mode of production' and data on top Party functionaries …

Power and Property
The ordinary Soviet person, the university professor included, has lived for decades in a world of myths and legends, begun by the great mystifier Stalin. The world that surrounded Soviet people was, in a sense, divided. On the one hand, there was the beautiful country with wise leaders and a happy population and, on the other hand, the day-to-day realities: communal apartments, bad adulterated food, doctors unable to treat, officials who had to …

The Market as an Object of Sociological Investigation
Sociologists often complain that economists produce distorted pictures of the economy and society, and in particular that they exaggerate the role of market relations. The representatives of sociology justly point out that, in addition to the market, other economic structures affect affairs of state and of households. Indeed, the market itself is presented by traditional economists in an excessively abstract manner or one derived from obsolete hi…

Trois grandes thories…

Principles of Labour Division between Men and Women in the Current Urban Families
Work takes a considerable part of our life; its significance is even bigger if we take into account the work at home. It is also obvious that there is visible inequality between males and females on the labour market. Despite the fact that women play an active role on the labour market they bear the most part of the home work. Even if a woman has a well-paid job she is traditionally responsible for home duties. Our knowledge in this topic is so r…
The Working Poor: Is the Margin of Safety Wide Enough
It seems as if we are discovering the phenomenon of poverty once more—realizing, of course, that it was not perestroika that gave it birth, but that in the Soviet period we just shamefully covered it up. In those days, only from scanty and classified materials could one learn that 15-20 percent of the population lived in poverty. Today, 30-40 percent of Russia's citizens are counted as poor. According to the Russian Federation Ministry of the Eco…

Russian Entrepreneurship and Violence in the Late 1990s
According to a widespread view, Russia is coming through the age of wild markets, with entrepreneurs having no well-established, shared rules and conventions. This view is certainly too simplistic. Both advanced and emerging markets are never able to exist without trust and commitment among economic agents. However, economic actions are based upon different institutional arrangements. These arrangements are described by three types of ethical the…
