Fairness of educational opportunities and income distribution
Purpose The focus of this article is on gender justice with respect to opportunities (educational) and outcome (earnings). The main research question is whether educational opportunities are positively converted into fairness of income, and for whom and where this is the case. The importance of this study lies in the understanding that the subjective feeling of justice is a significant measure of quality of life, of the individual's subjective fe…
Regional and Ethnic Disparities of School-to-Work Transitions in Bulgaria
Bulgaria’s educational and economic landscapes are marked by substantial regional disparities that are interlaced with ethnic inequalities in school-to-work transitions. Young adults from Roma and Turkish origins particularly suffer from disadvantages with respect to education and labour market participation. We ask how ethnicity affects labour market entry in Bulgaria once educational resources of different ethnic groups are accounted for, and h…
The local embeddedness of graduates’ education-job mismatch and of lifelong learning policies for its overcoming
The article’s aim is twofold: to outline the specificity of the embeddedness approach and to explore the embeddedness of graduates’ education-job mismatch and the formation of lifelong learning policies. The study is based on both quantitative and qualitative data, obtained from the Bulgarian Universities Ranking System, and from interviews with experts and young adults engaged in a lifelong learning programme. The analysis uses multilevel modell…

Gender Discrimination in the Hiring of Skilled Professionals in Two Male-Dominated Occupational Fields
The present article investigates gender discrimination in recruitment for two male-dominated occupations (mechanics and IT professionals). We empirically test two different explanatory approaches to gender discrimination in hiring; namely, statistical discrimination and taste-based discrimination. Previous studies suggest that, besides job applicants’ characteristics, organisational features play a role in hiring decisions. Our article contribute…
Emigration from the Perspective of the School-to-Work Transition in Bulgaria
The aim of this article is to analyse the extent to which differences between young people's education, employment status, and social background can explain the differences in their emigration intentions and actual experience with emigration. The goal is to create a profile of youth with emigration experience and examine the interrelation between two transitions, from education to work and from youth into adulthood, as measured by the degree of i…
The Bulgarian educational system and gender segregation in the labour market
School-to-work transitions are embedded in the institutional structures of educational systems. In particular, vocational education has been linked to greater horizontal gender segregation in employment. Similarly, research on higher education has uncovered how stratification at the tertiary level can promote gender segregation in the labour market. This paper investigates how gender typical employment is conditioned by the institutional features…
The Influence of Gender on Social Stratification in Bulgaria
This article focuses on an area where stratification and feminist research meet, at the levels of culture and structure. Gender is viewed as an individual characteristic contributing to the positioning of women in the social stratification, and, at the same time, it is viewed as socially constructed. Gender stratification in Bulgaria is analyzed on three levels: gender images in mass media commercials; a quantitative analysis of public opinion re…

The second type refers to human capital, and is analyzed through proxy variables such as educational attainment, experience, gender, and age. In this article, we answer the question "How do these factors determine the gender pay gap?" We run Mincerian equations usin…
