The Labour-Market Attachment and Well-Being of Immigrants in Sparsely Populated Regions of Finland
Our research aimed to explore community well-being and individual well-being of immigrants with a special view to economic integration. We are applying objective and subjective variables for well-being at both community and individual level in the counties, which represent regions outside the “growth centres” of Finland and are experiencing a decrease in population: Kymenlaakso, North Savo, and Kainuu. The study, utilising data from Statistics Fi…
Supporting Immigrants’ Employability? Experiences in Digital Pedagogy Applied with Immigrant Learners in Turku in Southwest Finland
Labor shortages and labor mismatches are common emergent problems in Finland, ones which will occur on a much broader scale in the future in an aging society. Immigrants constitute an important pool of labor, but sometimes it is difficult for them to find even a first job in local labor markets. Studies have shown that mastering the language of the host country is a crucial factor in the success of immigrants’ employment. The AboaNova development…
A Perceived Change in Intercultural Behavior
It has been studied that there are many young immigrants who are at risk of being marginalized in Finnish Lapland. There are less opportunities for participating in activities in northern Finland, access to the local labor market is difficult, and there are few activities that support the youth immigrant’s own culture. These dilemmas may have regional differences, but the economic prospects for living a meaningful life are seen to be weaker in th…
Multi-professional work practices in the field of immigrant integration – examples of collaboration between the police and social work
Development of the professional competences and work practices are required when promoting successful immigrant integration in a constantly diversifying society. One work method applied in this field is multi-professional collaboration. Cooperation between the authorities at the local level reduces the overlap between services and brings together expertise and resources, resulting in not only added value but also more proactive and less costly se…
Differential population development in the regions of Finland
This paper considers regional population development in Finland. The paper focuses in particular on the role of inter‐regional migration in reshaping the regional population distribution, and suggests that this has contributed to regional development inequalities. The paper questions whether policies to counter this trend following a Floridian approach can ever be effective. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
International migration between Finland and the Baltic Sea Region
Immigration from the former socialist countries into Western Europe generally increased after the fall of the Iron Curtain. This was also apparent with respect to the Nordic labour markets and Finland where the share of immigrants grew from countries around the Baltic Sea Region. The main immigrant groups come to Finland from Sweden, Russia and Estonia. Immigration from Poland, Lithuania and Latvia has not played such an important role. This pape…
Mobile vulnerabilities
In this article, the types of vulnerability faced by immigrants in the Finnish labour market are investigated in relation to differences in their ethnic origin. Labour‐market performance of immigrants is analysed by local labour‐market area. The most successful immigrants are so‐called Westerners. By contrast immigrants from the developing world face severe problems, especially the fundamental one of getting started in the labour market. High une…
Differential urbanisation in Finland
The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of urbanisation in Finland over a long time span 1941–98 in the light of the theoretical model of differential urbanisation, at the same time testing the applicability of the latter to the Finnish situation. Urbanisation began in Finland relatively late by comparison with other European countries, but the process has taken place all the more rapidly. Urbanisation started out from large cities, a…
