Retos habitacionales de la inmigración venezolana en Iquique y Alto Hospicio: Explorando bibliográficamente y sobre el terreno estrategias y barreras
Recent migratory dynamics, such as the Venezuelan humanitarian crisis and the increase in entries through unauthorized border crossings, have transformed the landscape of the Tarapacá region, in Chile, intensifying housing challenges such as limited access to adequate housing, which often leads to settlement in precarious camps (informal settlements). This article explores the perceptions of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and state institutio…
Assessing roles and strategies of public sector stakeholders in an evolving (lifestyle) migration industry: The case of the Dutch Emigration Expo
This study focuses on local and regional governments using place branding strategies to attract intra-EU inward migration for demographic and/or economic purposes. This forms an important aspect of contemporary migration industries, whereby the interlinking of lifestyle, work and economic investment is pivotal. Taking the case of the Emigration Expo event in the Netherlands, it draws on interviews with the organizer and with public sector exhibit…
International Immigration, Integration and Sustainability in Small Towns and Villages: Socio-Territorial Challenges in Rural and Semi-Rural Europe
This book explores the nature of immigration in rural areas and small towns in Europe. The authors extend recent efforts to study migration at a sub-national scale by focusing on non-metropolitan areas, and considering how globalisation and modernisation processes are experienced at a local level
Challenges in achieving sustainability in Iberian rural areas and small towns: Exploring immigrant stakeholders’ perceptions in Alentejo, Portugal, and Empordà, Spain
Exploring climate change effects in Euro-Mediterranean protected coastal wetlands: The cases of Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, Spain and Kotychi-Strofylia, Greece
Climate change is widely recognised as a serious threat, especially to some Mediterranean wetlands; therefore, their ongoing protection is of great concern. Aiguamolls de l’Empordà (north-east Catalonia, Spain) and Kotychi-Strofylia wetland (western Greece) are considered important coastal wetlands deserving protection both by European and national authorities. The main aim of this study was to explore stakeholders’ perceptions on local climate c…
Exploring methods and techniques for the analysis of senses of place and migration
The debate on ‘sense of place’ has been widespread in geography since the mid-1970s, yet with few exceptions the analytical potential of this concept has not been fully realized as far as the study of migration movements is concerned. A major reason for this has been methodology, or specifically the difficulties in capturing and evaluating the relevance of ‘place’ for migration processes. From a multidisciplinary standpoint, the article assesses …
Polish Immigration in Barcelona: The Sagrada Familia Neighbourhood as an Arena for Interaction
Big cities play a dominant role in European research and policies on immigration. However, in recent years the focus has shifted to smaller units. The research upon which this article is based assumes that neighbourhoods' spatial configuration and social tissue constitute an influencing context where interactions develop. Mainly using semi‐structured interviews and ethnographic fieldwork, this article examines the experiences of Polish immigrants…
Ruralphilia and urbophobia versus urbophilia and ruralphobia? Lessons from immigrant integration processes in small towns and rural areas in Spain: Ruralphilia and Urbophobia in Spain
Most research on immigrants has focused on their arrival in metropolitan areas or capital cities. However, in some parts of Europe international migration into small towns and rural areas is a significant feature, and as a result populations outside the major cities are becoming more diverse. This paper focuses on Spain, which has one of the most rapidly increasing immigrant populations in Europe. Based on fieldwork in five regions, new qualitati…
Integration and Resistance: The Relation of Social Organisations, Global Capital, Governments and International Immigration in Spain and Portugal
Integration is a key challenge facing modern society today. Integration and Resistance offers a new theoretical perspective for considering integration. By focusing on international immigrants and their organisations from a wider perspective the author demonstrates that the threat to social integration does not lie with the immigrants themselves but with global capital and the state. By analysis of data collected in Spain and Portugal the book br…
