  • Correlation of BMI-related insulin resistance and cardiometabolic multimorbidity risk in the hypertension with sarcopenia adults

    Open Access•Jingfeng Zou, S Li et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2026

Background Cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) and obesity are growing global public health burdens. The obesity paradox, however, obscures how insulin resistance (IR) shapes CMM risk in individuals with coexisting hypertension and sarcopenia, a question that remains unresolved. Methods Two body mass index (BMI)-adjusted IR indices – the estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR) and the triglyceride glucose index (TyG) – were assessed in the China H…

  • Who Are More Likely to Have Quit Intentions among Malaysian Adult Smokers? Findings from the 2020 ITC Malaysia Survey

Open Access•Siti Idayu Hasan, Susan Kaai et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Increasing quitting among smokers is essential to reduce the population burden of smoking-related diseases. Smokers' intentions to quit smoking are among the strongest predictors of future quit attempts. It is therefore important to understand factors associated with intentions to quit, and this is particularly important in low- and middle-income countries, where there have been few studies on quit intentions. The present study was conducted to i…

  • Factors Associated with Quit Intentions among Adult Smokers in South Korea: Findings from the 2020 ITC Korea Survey

    Open Access•Minjung Han, Dong-Hee Seo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Background : South Korea has made substantial progress on tobacco control, but cigarette smoking prevalence is still high. Previous studies were conducted before the use of nicotine vaping products (NVPs) or heated tobacco products (HTPs) became popular. Thus, whether the concurrent use of NVPs or HTPs affects quit intentions among Korean smokers remains a question that needs to be explored. This study aims to identify predictors of quit intentio…

  • Are smoking restrictions at public venues and psychosocial beliefs associated with intentions to quit smoking among smokers in Malaysia

Muniswary Subramaniyan, Anne Yee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2022

The Malaysian government reinforced smoking restrictions at public venues to protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. This study examined whether smokers' reports about smoking restrictions and psychosocial beliefs were associated with quit intentions among Malaysian smokers. Data from 1047 cigarette smokers (103 females and 944 males) aged 18 and older from the 2020 International Tobacco Control (ITC) Malaysia Wave 1 Survey were …

  • Awareness of Marketing of Heated Tobacco Products and Cigarettes and Support for Tobacco Marketing Restrictions in Japan: Findings from the 2018 International Tobacco Control (ITC) Japan Survey

Open Access•Lorraine Craig, Itsuro Yoshimi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Japan is one of the world's largest cigarette markets and the top heated tobacco product (HTP) market. No forms of tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship (TAPS) are banned under national law, although the industry has some voluntary TAPS restrictions. This study examines Japanese tobacco users' self-reported exposure to cigarette and HTP marketing through eight channels, as well as their support for TAPS bans. Data are from the 2018 ITC …

  • Reasons for Regularly Using Heated Tobacco Products among Adult Current and Former Smokers in Japan: Finding from 2018 ITC Japan Survey

Open Access•Steve S Xu, Gang Meng et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The market growth of heated tobacco products (HTPs), such as IQOS, Ploom TECH, and glo, has increased dramatically in Japan since 2016. Little is known about the reasons why current and former smokers are using HTPs. The data for this cross-sectional study were from the 2018 (Wave 1) International Tobacco Control (ITC) Japan Survey, a national web-based survey of 4500 people, including 658 current HTP users, of whom 549 were concurrently smoking …

  • Survey Methods of the 2018 International Tobacco Control (ITC) Japan Survey

Open Access•Mary E Thompson, Christian Boudreau et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

This paper describes the methods of the Wave 1 (2018) International Tobacco Control (ITC) Japan Survey. The respondents were adults aged 20 years and older in one of four user groups: (1) cigarette-only smokers who smoked at least monthly and used heated tobacco products (HTPs) not at all or less than weekly, (2) HTP-only users who used HTPs at least weekly and smoked cigarettes not at all or less than monthly, (3) cigarette-HTP dual users who sm…

    Open Access•Janet Chung‐Hall, Geoffrey T Fong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Health warnings are an effective strategy for communicating the health harms of smoking, encouraging quitting, and preventing smoking initiation. This study examines the effectiveness of existing text-only health warnings, identifies key predictors of warning effectiveness, and assesses support for pictorial warnings in Japan. Data are from the 2018 International Tobacco Control (ITC) Japan Survey, a cohort survey of adult cigarette smokers (n = …

  • Evaluation of smoke-free policies in seven cities in China, 2007-2012

    Geoffrey T Fong, G Sansone et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2015

Existing partial smoking bans across China have had minimal impact on reducing smoking in public places. A strongly enforced, comprehensive national smoke-free law is urgently needed in order to achieve greater public health gains

  • Awareness, Trial, and Current Use of Electronic Cigarettes in 10 Countries: Findings from the ITC Project

Open Access•Shannon Gravely, Geoffrey T Fong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

The cross-country variability in awareness, trial, and current use of e-cigarettes is likely due to a confluence of country-specific market factors, tobacco control policies and regulations (e.g., the legal status of e-cigarettes and nicotine), and the survey timing along the trajectory of e-cigarette awareness and trial/use in each country. These ITC results constitute an important snapshot of an early stage of what appears to be a rapid progres…

  • Perceptions of tobacco health warnings in China compared with picture and text-only health warnings from other countries: An experimental study

    Open Access•Geoffrey T Fong, D Hammond et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2010

    (1) Picture warnings are rated as much more effective than the same warnings without pictures. (2) The revised health warnings in China, introduced in October 2008, are only marginally more effective than the previous warning and far less effective than even text warnings from other countries. These results, coupled with population-based evaluation studies, suggest that pictorial warnings would significantly increase the impact of health warnings…
