  • Population and income

João Ricardo Faria, Jo Ão Ricardo Faria et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2006

This note presents wide evidence on the relationship between population and income for 125 countries for which data was available for the period 1950–2000. The main result is that there is a weak but negative relationship between population growth and per capita GDP, as income increases population expands at a slower rate. This relationship appears to be stronger for African countries and for Asian countries before 1970

  • Remittances, Institutions and Economic Growth

    Open Access•Natalia Catrinescu, Miguel A León‐Ledesma et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2005•Cited by: 19•References: 2

There is considerable debate regarding the relative contribution of international migrants' remittances to sustainable economic development. While the rates and levels of officially recorded remittances to developing countries has increased enormously over the last decade, academic and policy-oriented research has not come to a consensus over whether remittances contribute to longer-term growth by building human and financial capital or degrade l…

  • Unemployment, Hysteresis and Transition

    Open Access•Miguel A León‐Ledesma, Peter McAdam•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In this paper, we quantify the degree of persistence in the unemployment rates of transition countries using a variety of methods benchmarked against the EU. Initially, we work with the concept of linear ‘Hysteresis’ as described by the presence of unit roots in unemployment as in most empirical research on this area. Given that this is potentially a narrow definition, we also take into account the existence of structural breaks and nonlinear dyn…

  • International Migration and the Role of Remittances in Eastern Europe

    Open Access•Miguel A León‐Ledesma, Miguel León‐Ledesma et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration•2004•Cited by: 19•References: 2

In this paper we analyse the effect of remittances on employment performance for Central and East European (CEE) economies. We show that the impact of remittances on unemployment depends on its effect on productivity growth and investment. In order to empirically analyse the impact of remittances we estimate a productivity equation using a set of 11 transition countries during the 1990 to 1999 period. Our results show support for the view that re…
