Experiences of health informers working with intercultural communication in Stockholm, Sweden during Covid-19
Background During the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was noted that migrants in Stockholm, Sweden, had a higher risk of contracting the virus and had a higher risk of mortality. In response to this, to provide information to people who did not have Swedish as their native language and therefore had limited access to the latest information and guidelines due to potential language barriers, authorities implemented an intercultural comm…
Differences in healthcare access between Rohingya refugees and their host community in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh
Background Forced migration is increasing globally and majority of the forced migrants are displaced in low- and middle-income countries. Bangladesh, which hosts about one million Rohingya refugees in one of the world's largest refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, faces challenges in ensuring equitable healthcare access for both refugees and host communities. This can create disparities in healthcare access for both the groups. Understanding the dispari…
How to make sense of information about Covid-19 and the vaccine from the authorities? A qualitative study of migrants’ experiences in two Swedish communities
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the communication challenges faced by public authorities in reaching all groups in society. The overall aim of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences of non-native Swedish speaking residents in two multicultural municipalities in metropolitan Stockholm regarding the reception and understanding of COVID-19 and vaccination information from authorities. In addition, the aim is to identify…
Student experiences and perspectives on decolonising global health education
BACKGROUND: Decolonisation has become a global health priority, addressing inequities rooted in colonial histories that continue to shape power dynamics and knowledge systems. Nordic global health programmes bring together students and faculty from diverse backgrounds in a region defined by inclusive ideals but shaped by underexamined colonial legacies. This context offers a valuable setting to examine how decolonial perspectives are integrated o…
The collection and integration of data on migrants in health information systems
Addressing disparities and promoting health for migrants requires policies and practices that are grounded in comprehensive and accurate health data. Health Information Systems (HIS) play a crucial role in this process. However, data on migrants is often incomplete and of poor quality in European HIS. A recent scoping review identified a gap in research on strengthening HIS for data on the health of migrants in Ireland, a country where one in fiv…
Association of international remittance with satisfaction and utilization of maternal healthcare services in Nepal
This study aimed to explore the association of international remittance with satisfaction and utilization of maternal health services in Nepal. This is a secondary analysis based on two prospective cohort studies. Regression analyses were carried out to assess the association. Women from remittance‐receiving households had 1.27 higher odds of receiving timely initiation of first ANC visit (aOR = 1.27; 95% CI: 1.19, 1.35). The association between …
The Intersection Between Migration and Global Health
Migration and health is one of the fields that encompasses all key aspects of global health. The health of migrants is impacted predominantly by determinants of health, conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. The determinants are dynamic and vary during the pre‐departure, transit, arrival and return phases, spanning across cities, regions, countries and continents. Literature on migration and health is not reflective of the…
Migrant health and language barriers
There is a knowledge translation gap between policies promoting equitable access to healthcare and person-centred care, and the use of untrained interpreters in cross-cultural consultations leading to disparities in health outcomes. An 11 member inter-sectoral working group met at four workshops to discuss and agree on levers and barriers to the provision of trained interpreters in healthcare settings in Ireland. The process was informed by Parti…
Detainees, staff, and health care services in immigration detention centres
BACKGROUND: Immigration detention has been shown to negatively affect the health and well-being of detainees. The aim of the study was to describe and compare policies and practices that could affect the health and well-being of immigrant detainees in the Benelux countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg) to those in Sweden. DESIGN: This was a case study. Data were collected in two phases using a questionnaire developed particularly for…
Quality of life among immigrants in Swedish immigration detention centres
BACKGROUND: Detention of immigrants negatively affects their health and well-being. Quality of life (QOL) is a broad concept incorporating the self-evaluation of one's own health and well-being that can provide an understanding of the health and well-being of immigrant detainees. The aim of this study was to estimate QOL among immigrant detainees in Sweden and to assess its relationship with the services provided in detention centres and with the…
