  • The Social Biography

    Open Access•Jan Willem Stutje•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•2022•References: 4

There were times – not so long ago – when it seemed that historical processes could be dissected as though human action did not matter. Those times have changed. Nowadays, scholarly biography is enjoying broad interest, also among social historians, as is shown in this issue of the IRSH, in which John D. French explains how biography can contribute to a better understanding of global labour history. This contribution addresses three issues. First…

  • Toward an authoritarian and populist monarchy in Belgium

    Jan Willem Stutje•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In historiography, the relationship between the Belgian socialist Hendrik de Man and King Leopold III has been addressed mainly in the context of what became the so-called ‘Royal Question’ after the war, that is, the question of whether Leopold's return to the throne was possible and desirable given his collaborationist attitude during the German occupation. The years before the Second World War have received much less attention, even though this…

  • Antisemitism among Dutch socialists in the 1880s and 1890s

    Jan Willem Stutje•ARTICLE•Patterns of Prejudice•2017

Antisemitism in the Dutch labour movement has not been studied sufficiently. This is certainly true with regard to Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis and the early socialist movement of the nineteenth century. However, anti-Jewish propaganda needs to be taken into account in order to understand why the Jewish proletariat joined the socialist ranks at such a late stage, that is, only after the reformist wing split from Domela Nieuwenhuis's Social Democr…

  • Charismatic Leadership and Networks in Anarchism

    Open Access•Jan Willem Stutje•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•2017

The terms "Marxist" and "Marxism" have a problematic history. Their use raised questions as early as the 1870s, when Bakunin coined the terms in his polemic against the supposedly vanity-driven "leader" Karl Marx. By labelling Marx's supporters "Marxists", the Russian anarchist created the impression that they were slavishly subjecting themselves to Marx, a painful suggestion that the egalitarian early communists, already mistrustful of the perso…

  • Concerning Der Spätkapitalismus

    Jan Willem Stutje•ARTICLE•Historical Materialism•2007

Between 1940 and 1980, Ernest Mandel (1923–1995) studied many aspects of capitalism. With his magna opera, Traité d'économie marxiste (1962) and Der Spätkapitalismus (1972) he had a great impact on the social movements which emerged in the 1960s and 1970s of the last century. This article attempts to unravel the story of the development of Mandel's economic historical work. It follows the search for the synthesis of late capitalism, positions Man…
