  • Daan op zijn knieën

    Open Access•Jacco Pekelder, Neele Teneyken•ARTICLE•BMGN - Low Countries Historical…•2024

  • Dealing with Violent Protest in West Germany and the Netherlands

    Open Access•Jacco Pekelder•ARTICLE•Moving the Social•2021

Political violence is a specific category of participation that is frowned upon in most societies. This article compares how two western-style post war democracies, West Germany and the Netherlands, dealt with violent politics from the left in the 1960s and 1970s. On the macro level, a lack of integrative mechanisms in the West German political system fostered a radicalization that the Netherlands was able to avoid. On the mesolevel of intra-move…

  • Europa en de opkomst van Duitsland, 1830-1871

    Jacco Pekelder•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Geschiedenis•2020

Europe and the rise of Germany, 1830-1871. The German Question in European perspective A century and a half ago Bismarck’s Reichgründung fundamentally changed Europe’s states system. It marked the end of a quest for German unity that, since the 1830s, had been a central theme of European politics. This era has so far received little attention, and only a few historians appreciate that the rise of Germany in the nineteenth century triggered not on…

  • Foreign Front

    Jacco Pekelder•ARTICLE•German History•2014

On 2 June 1967 West Berlin student Benno Ohnesorg was killed by a plain-clothed policeman firing a handgun. It was a crucial moment in the history of the New Left movement in 1960s Germany. Many historians consider the event to have strongly contributed to mass mobilization against the established order, leading to the heydays of the extra-parliamentary protest movement in early 1968. Eventually, the killing of one person led some of the activist…

  • Between Prague Spring and French May

Martin Klimke, Jacco Pekelder et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Between Prague Spring and French…•2011

Abandoning the usual Cold War–oriented narrative of postwar European protest and opposition movements, this volume offers an innovative, interdisciplinary, and comprehensive perspective on two decades of protest and social upheaval in postwar Europe. It examines the mutual influences and interactions among dissenters in Western Europe, the Warsaw Pact countries, and the nonaligned European countries, and shows how ideological and political develo…
