Alternative estimates of the centenarian population in Argentina for census years 2001, 2010, and 2022
BACKGROUNDThe rise in human longevity has brought increased academic attention to centenarians, a rare population group often subject to age misreporting. OBJECTIVEThis paper compares the census counts of centenarians in Argentina in 2001, 2010, and 2022 with estimates derived from indirect demographic methods and alternative data sources.
Mortality analysis of persons with disabilities in Argentina by age, sex and duration of benefit, 2015–16
This article describes the differential mortality of Argentina’s disability pension beneficiaries during the 2015–16 period, based on National Social Security Administration ( Administración Nacional de la Seguridad Social – ANSES) payment records. It compares data for those with an assessed disability with overall population data, as well as with available international data (from Canada, Chile, Mexico, and the United States of America). In addi…
Disability insurance risks
This article analyses the risk of disability facing workers who contribute to the Argentinian Integrated Social Security System ( Sistema Integrado Previsional Argentino — SIPA). Using administrative records as our source of data for the period 2000‐2006, the results indicate that 1.46 workers per 1,000 became disabled annually during that period. The risk of disability rates were higher for men than for women, but increased with age for both sex…
Participation of seniors in the Argentinian labour market
The aim of this article is to define the factors which determine seniors' decisions to continue to participate in the labour market in Argentina. An option value model is developed. This model is used to produce estimates based on micro‐data drawn from household surveys. These indicate the relative importance of the impact of conditions governing eligibility for benefits on decisions to remain actively employed. Work history is found to be the ma…
From reform to crisis
Argentina underwent economic and social collapse in December 2001. The crisis brought the worst socioeconomic indicators in its history, and the pension system was not immune from this disaster, which was unparalleled in any middle‐income developing country. In 1994 the pension system had been restructured, and was regarded as a viable model for other reforms elsewhere. This article discusses in general terms the features of the current pension s…
Did Africans Live Longer in the Antebellum United States
This article argues that the accepted view of the mortality of enslaved Africans in the United States rests on fragile estimates; these estimates are not robust to flaws in the data....We examine the sensitivity of previous life table estimates for the African population of the United States to assumptions about the data. We combine modern demographic techniques and new model life tables--the Liberian model life tables--developed for the study of…
