Social work and the understanding of help: Learning from narratives of residents of Japan’s national Hansen’s disease sanatoriums
Attentive listening to narratives can shift social work from mere knowledge transmission towards mutuality. This article reports on an educational practice that enabled a move from ‘learning about’ to ‘learning from’ the perspectives of people directly affected, through encounters between social work students and residents of Hansen’s disease sanatoriums in Japan. Using a three-stage framework – preparation, encounter and post-visit reflection – …
Relationship between Tilt Sensation Ability and Lower Limb Injuries in Junior Athletes
The purpose of this study was to devise a tilt sensation measurement method to evaluate ankle proprioception and to examine its reliability. It was also used to determine the relationship among tilt sensation abilities, physical development, and lower limb injuries in junior athletes. In this study, a step platform created tilt angles. Participants with eye masks answered "yes" or "no" to sensing a tilt, evaluated over nine or seven trials. Exper…
A Longitudinal Study of the Relationship Between Lower Extremity Field Tests and Medial Elbow Injuries in Elementary School Baseball Players
This study aimed to examine prospectively the relationship between the deep squatting test and medial elbow injuries in elementary school baseball players and to determine the usefulness of the lower extremity field test in throwing injuries. The participants were 254 players who had participated in preseason medical checkups in both 2019 and 2020 and had no problems with the 2019 medical checkups. The evaluation parameters included ultrasonograp…
Gender differences in physical activity and sedentary behavior of Japanese primary school children during school cleaning time, morning recess and lunch recess
These findings suggest that the total amount of school cleaning time, recess and lunch time likely contribute to daily MVPA but the beneficial effects should be further explored in future intervention studies
Associations of Physical Activity and Sedentary Time in Primary School Children with Their Parental Behaviors and Supports
Background: The associations of objectively evaluated moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary time between primary school children and their fathers or mothers have not been fully understood. Therefore, we tested the associations in children. Methods: The participants were first to sixth grade boys (n = 166, 9.4 ± 1.6 years) and girls (n = 202, 9.4 ± 1.6 years) and their parents (fathers, n = 123 and mothers, n = 321). MVPA an…
Changes in Weight, Sedentary Behaviour and Physical Activity during the School Year and Summer Vacation
Background : To examine bidirectional associations between body weight and objectively assessed sedentary behaviour (SB) and physical activity (PA) during the school year and summer vacation. Methods : Participants were 209 Japanese boys and girls (9.0 ± 1.8 years at baseline). SB and PA were measured using triaxial accelerometry that discriminated between ambulatory and non-ambulatory PA, screen time measured by questionnaire during the school-t…
Objectively evaluated physical activity and sedentary time in primary school children by gender, grade and types of physical education lessons
Children did not engage in much MVPA and also spent time in sedentary time during PE, but there are no gender differences. The children were most active during ball game lessons. Therefore, it is important to increase MVPA and reduce sedentary time during PE in both genders
Seasonal changes in objectively measured sedentary behavior and physical activity in Japanese primary school children
These findings show that primary school children in Japan are less active in the summer vacation, as indicated by both higher SB and lower LPA and ambulatory MVPA in both genders. Moreover, the seasonal change in non-ambulatory MVPA for Japanese children was affected by gender. This study also suggests that sports participation and bedroom TV ownership may moderate seasonal changes in PA and SB. The results emphasize the need to take summer vacat…
