Video Treatment Re-Examined
This discussion will address clinical, procedural, and theoretical issues raised by Lyons and Williams in response to my paper. I will elaborate on potential enactments, the erotic transference, and the third as related to the case
Video Communication and Transgenerational Shame in the Mother/Daughter Bond
This paper describes how video technology may provide a less intrusive path for patient/therapist engagement, and create a potential for shared explorations in a transitional space. However, while video facilitated treatment may provide a less intrusive realm for fragile patients who struggle with anxiety and toxic shame, it also excludes aspects of the sensory and embodied realm. I discuss how video technology ultimately contributed to the deepe…
Developing a reflective self in cyber space
This article will address how cyber technology may facilitate reflective functioning with patients who present with primitive self states, fragmentation, and dissociation. The utilization of text-based information and communication technology may allow for a reflective space, apart from the therapist’s explicit intrusion and the potential danger of abandonment and rejection, and may help develop the capacity for reflection and symbolization. Thro…

Intimate Partner Violence in the Evangelical Community
There is a great deal of research on intimate partner violence, but few studies investigate the role of Evangelical religious and cultural values on intimate partner violence or faith‐based prevention and interventions strategies in this community. This study with 8 Evangelical pastors and 11 clinicians contributes to the literature by examining the effect of religious values and social attitudes on intimate partner violence in the Evangelical co…
Comparing Women's Roles in Two Faith-Based Communities with Implications for Value-Based Practice
This qualitative study compares Evangelical Christian (EC) and ultra Orthodox Jewish (OJ) women, both from conservative, faith-based communities. The findings are clustered around three primary themes-complementary (traditional) gender roles, distrust of outsiders, and the authority of religious leaders. Nine EC women and thirteen ultra OJ women were interviewed for this study, using a modified grounded-theory method. Based on the findings, guide…
Beyond Avoidance and Secrecy
This paper describes a process-oriented approach to teaching ethical dilemmas to graduate social work students. The authors examine related empirical data and use classroom vignettes to illustrate their teaching methods. Several ethical dilemmas in different phases of clinical practice will be presented, including gift giving and receiving, flexible treatment frame and contact post termination. Key Words: Ethicsboundary violationstreatment framet…
Understanding Causes of and Responses to Intimate Partner Violence in a Jewish Orthodox Community
There has been little research on intimate partner violence (IPV) in faith-based communities. This qualitative study examines social attitudes and religious values in an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community that affect the incidence of IPV and prevent women survivors from seeking help. Interviews were conducted with 8 Orthodox women and 11 community leaders, and findings include the following: (a) causes of IPV were early marriage, separation of the s…
Identity and Gender Roles of Orthodox Jewish Women
The purpose of this study is to examine how ultra-Orthodox women's unique religious beliefs and values affect their gender roles and everyday life. The ultra-Orthodox community is one of several sub-groups within the Orthodox community that, overall, has a range of attitudes towards the women's roles. To date, little research has been conducted with this community. This study, therefore, aims to examine these women's roles as mothers, wives and c…
Factors in the integration process of adolescent immigrants
English This is an exploratory study that examines factors in the process of adjustment and integration between Ethiopian immigrants and non-Ethiopian adolescents in Israel. The findings are that racism and discrimination, intergenerational conflicts and differences in communication systems pose significant difficulties for the integration of Ethiopian adolescents into Israeli society. French Cette étude exploratoire examine les facteurs dans le …
The Reflective Self
The following paper will apply a social constructionist paradigm to the concepts of the reflective self, creativity and intuition as valuable skills in social work practice education. The students' learning process and their integration of self-reflective, intuitive and creative knowledge and skills will be illustrated through excerpts from their final papers in an advanced social work practice course taught by this instructor. A qualitative anal…
To disclose or not to disclose
Self‐disclosure is a frequent topic in the relational psychotherapy literature. However, there are few psychoanalytic writings or empirical studies that concern self‐disclosure in the context of cross‐cultural treatment; specifically treatment between Israeli therapists and Palestinian clients. This particular subject broadens the investigation of cross‐cultural treatment beyond race and color into the domain of religious and political difference…
