  • Selective punitiveness among social work students

Open Access•Michael Hanslmaier, Christian Ghanem et al.•ARTICLE•Probation Journal•2025

This article presents the primary results of a longitudinal study on attitudes toward punishment, among social work students in Germany. This is particularly relevant because social workers, especially in the field of criminal justice, are part of the state control bodies required to set boundaries and decide for or against certain sanctions. The results show that punitive attitudes are not uncommon among first-year social work students but decre…

  • Threshold Decisions in Social Work

Open Access•Danielle Turney, Ravit Alfandari et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2024•References: 56

Decision making is an intrinsic and complex aspect of social work practice, requiring consideration of diverse but connected aspects. Decisions are often required as to whether a situation requires protective state intervention or whether it reaches the criteria for public or charitable services. Such instances of deciding whether or not a situation is ‘on one side of the line or the other’ are referred to in this article as ‘threshold judgements…

  • Resozialisierung

Heinz Cornel, Christian Ghanem et al.•BOOK•Resozialisierung•2023

In order to implement the resocialization mandate, a broad range of legal, criminological, methodological and institutional knowledge is required in the practice of the penal system and offender assistance. The 5th, updated and expanded new edition of the handbook provides practice-oriented interdisciplinary expertise on resocialization, education and socialization. It takes into account current legal developments and criminological findings and …

Open Access•Christian Ghanem, Konstantin Kirchheim et al.•ARTICLE•Soziale Passagen•2022

  • Zehn Jahre Soziale Passagen

Open Access•Markus Eckl, Jessica Prigge et al.•ARTICLE•Soziale Passagen•2020

  • The Evolution of Social Work from Disconnected Groups to a Scientific Community

Open Access•Markus Eckl, Christian Ghanem et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 29

This study investigates the collaboration networks within the social work discipline using the recently established Social Work Research Database. By means of network-analysis methods, we investigate the collaborations between 1990 and 2014, while the nodes of this network represent social work scholars (N = 19,789) connected by edges representing common publications (N = 314,180). We analyse the structural characteristics of these co-authorship …

  • How do social work novices and experts solve professional problems? A micro-analysis of epistemic activities and the use of evidence

Christian Ghanem, Ingo Kollar et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Work•2016•References: 14

Evidence-based practice in social work is an intensely debated topic, with many differing perspectives on how it should be done. However, we know surprisingly little about how social workers actually engage in professional problem-solving and about the knowledge base of those processes. To shed light on this topic of social work expertise, we present a novel model of scientific reasoning and argumentation and investigate how experts and novices d…

    Open Access•Christian Ghanem•ARTICLE•International Social Work•2016•References: 1

In this contribution, a German probation officer provides some critical reflections and argues for an increasing need to enhance intercultural sensitivity among probation officers. If the probation service wants to avoid contributing to the social exclusion of its clients, changes on an educational, organizational and political level are necessary
