After months of waiting I was granted a visa for Iran in March 1998 to study mainly the religious practices of Shia women.1 During earlier fieldwork sessions I had been interested primarily in secular feasts but also had participated in local pilgrimages and rowrZeh, a ritual including a sermon and narratives of the martyrdom of the Imams.
