Primordial Ethnicity or Modern Nationalism: The Case of Yugoslavia's Muslims
One of the longest standing debates in social science has been that which has divided students of ethnicity over the issue of modernization. On the one side are the tribalists, who emphasize that the ethnonational consciousness of a self-defined group is historically rooted and believe that processes of racial and cultural homogenization associated with the broader phenomenon of modernization promote the gradual break-down of ethnic boundaries wi…

Factionalism in Church-State Interaction: The Croatian Catholic Church in the 1980s
Among the approaches one might adopt in studying church-state interaction is one that endeavors to treat both church and state as active subjects and which tries to be sensitive to factional divisions within both. This approach makes it clear that just as a regime may have a religious policy, the churches may also have policies toward the regime, and that the resulting relationship reflects the interplay of both policies. If there are factions in…
Political Struggle and Institutional Reorganization in Yugoslavia
One of the most salient, if less remarked upon, characteristics of Communist regimes is the frequency with which basic political institutional arrangements are overhauled. Almost every Communist country has had at least two constitutions; some (such as the Soviet Union) have had three, and Yugoslavia is now under its fourth constitution since the Communists came to power. In most cases the leader, originally simply general-secretary of his respec…
Disaffection and Dissent in East Germany
Communism traces deviance, disaffection, and dissent alike to alienation and presocialist forms of consciousness. Insofar as the building of communism brings about an end to exploitation and alienation, deviance, disaffection, and dissent should disappear with them. The persistence of disaffection and articulate dissent, or of crime, delinquency, and social deviance generally, represents a failure of socialization—a failure, thus, of the system. …
