Hanumān in Newar (Buddhist) Vihāras of the Kathmandu Valley
In his work Medieval Nepal (part 2: 864), the Nepalese scholar D.R. Regmi asserted that a (typical) Newar Buddhist monastery (vihāra) has Mahākāla, Hāritī, Gaṇeśa and Hanumān installed in wall niches as protectors. Earlier, Brian Hodgson’s informant Pandit Amṛtānanda (1774–1834) had made similar statements when describing the Buddhist vihāras in the city of Patan. In this article, I will present the results of a preliminary survey of iconic and a…
A Model of the Universe in Kathmandu's Old Royal Palace
This paper discusses a model of the universe found in Mohan courtyard of the old royal palace of Kathmandu, the Hanumānḍhokā. It was commissioned and installed by King Pratāpa Malla in 1656 CE. The artifact is referred to as “earth-ball” or terrestrial globe (bhūgola) in an inscription and is based on Purāṇic concepts of the universe. An eighteenth-century ritual text indicates that it was an object of worship in the courtyard
Modern Maṇḍala Meditation: Some Observations
In recent decades, Buddhist maṇḍalas have become increasingly popular. The creation of the Kālacakra (‘Wheel of Time’) maṇḍala from coloured grains of sand by Tibetan monks can be seen in museums around the world. Maṇḍala colouring books, part of the recent adult colouring book trend, are on display in many bookstores. Maṇḍalas are now perceived as ‘aids’ or ‘tools to meditation’ and designated as ‘meditation diagrams’ and ‘meditational art’. In …
Adhāraṇīfor each day of the week: Thesaptavāratradition of the Newar Buddhists
The paper discusses a group ofdhāraṇīs associated with the seven days (saptavāra) of the week, with eachdhāraṇībeing recited on a specific day. The visual forms of thedhāraṇīs were represented in miniature paintings in manuscripts of thesaptavāratexts and in woodcarvings on the struts of two Newar Buddhist monasteries in Kathmandu. The paper shows that even though two members of thesaptavāragroup were originally male, eventually all members came …

The Golden Window above the Golden Door of Caukoṭ Darbār, a building on the western side of the (former) Royal Palace complex, is a major attraction in the city of Patan (Nepal). The gilt window panel features a representation of Avalokiteśvara in his form as Sṛṣṭikartā ("creator") emanating Hindu divinities from his body. The sides, base and tympanum of the window likewise display Hindu divinities. The construction of the window has been ascribe…
The Śāradātilakatantra on yoga: A new edition and translation of chapter 25
This article provides a new edition and translation of chapter 25 of the Śāradātilaka(tantra), a compendium on mantraśāstra composed, probably in the twelfth century, by Lakṣmaṇadeśika. The chapter itself presents a type of yoga that combines elements we normally associate with different yoga systems. In particular, we find elements associated with systems usually labelled as haṭhayoga, and elements of mantra practice as well. The chapter also co…

The Secret of the Three Cities: An Introduction to Hindu Śākta Tantrism
The Goddess Mahā;cīnakrama-Tārā (Ugra-Tārā) In Buddhist And Hindu Tantrism
It is well known that some goddesses are worshipped in both the Buddhist and Hindu Tantric traditions. A form of the Buddhist Vajrayoginī, accompanied by Vajravarṇanī and Vajravairocanī, is the prototype of the Hindu Chinnamastā accompanied by Ḍākinī and Varṅinī. Forms of Ekajaṭā and Mañjughoṣa were adopted from the Buddhist pantheon into the Hindu and worshipped by the same name. Usually it is not easy to trace how and when these adaptations too…

Selecting and perfecting mantras in Hindu tantrism
The exposition of different deity mantras forms an essential part of Tantric compendia. A mantra, a combination of letters thought to be of divine origin, is transmitted by a preceptor to a disciple in an initiation ritual whereby the disciple is authorized to practise its ritual repetition and strive for its perfection in order to attain supernatural powers. The different stages of the process from the selection of the mantra by the preceptor to…
