    Open Access•Logie Barrow•ARTICLE•Moving the Social•2020

This emphasises the richness of late-1960s leftist activity; author’s reaction to the twin shocks of 1956 (Suez and Hungary) into opposition to both Western and Stalinist imperialisms; dynamics of the “International Socialist” group. On fringes of struggles at LSE; their impact. Servicing others’ struggles; full employment from 1940s allowed shopfloor momentum: ‘DIY reformism’; example: Manchester’s Roberts-Arundel struggle. GLC tenants’ movement…

    Open Access•Logie Barrow•ARTICLE•History Workshop Journal•2017

Jutta’s death dumbfounded almost all friends and acquaintances: she had been keeping her multiple myeloma (a bone-marrow cancer that unexpectedly accelerated) as good as secret from all but the few friends who knew of her sudden confinement to a wheelchair in late 2015. She had also, for example, been refereeing an article a mere fortnight earlier. Her parents originally moved, or were expelled, from Poznan/Posen. As Germans under Polish rule fro…

Socialists of the late nineteenth century inherited assumptions about the priority of democracy from a long tradition of British Radicalism. However, the advent of the Fabians, who rejected this tradition as primitive, and of an ILP leadership more concerned to enter than reform parliament, meant that the movement was split between 'strong' an…

Most of the people discussed in this paper would have been amazed at being drawn into a publication chiefly concerned with ecclesiastical history. Some would undoubtedly have treated the words as a rag of very great redness. To elucidate the incongruity, I will briefly summarise who these people were, and when they lived. The period is roughly 1850-1910; the people are those whom I define as plebeian autodidacts. By plebeian I mean, inclusively, …

  • On El Lissitsky

    Logie Barrow, K P Mayer•ARTICLE•New left review•1967

Logie Barrow writes: Marx’s ‘merciless criticism of all that exists’ can, as Russian formalists noted, be evolutionary as well as genetic. Some of Lissitsky’s perceptions predate those of McLuhan, but are incorporated, not into a discussion of trends as in the latter’s neon inevitabilism, but into an awareness
