Using Hypothetical Probability Discounting to Measure Socially Influenced Risk-Taking during a Viral Outbreak
During the COVID-19 pandemic, citizens were asked to avoid social contact to prevent the spread of the virus. In two separate online studies, we used three hypothetical scenarios within a probability discounting task to investigate whether participants would risk a monetary fine to break “lockdown” conditions when urged to by different types of social contacts (friends, parents, partners) and social contacts of varying proximity to the participan…
Deictic Framing Performance Fails to Generalize to Other Perspective-Taking Tasks
The behavioral processes underlying perspective taking have not been studied extensively. One approach to understanding and enhancing perspective taking, deictic framing, has been proposed. Proponents of this approach have suggested that deictic framing is a core property of perspective taking. A training protocol based on deictic framing has been developed and tested, but researchers generally evaluate the effectiveness of the protocol using tas…

Local volunteers respond to the Rena oil spill in Maketū, New Zealand
Following the MV Rena grounding and oil spill in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand in October 2011, the Māori community of Maketū were quick to respond to the arrival of oil on their beaches. They asserted their rangatiratanga by establishing their marae as a base and successfully coordinated a clean‐up by more than 450 volunteers, feeding these volunteers every day. We interviewed 11 clean‐up leaders and volunteers in Maketū to gather information a…
