Effects of Massed versus Distributed Practice of Test Taking on Achievement and Test Anxiety
The effects of massed versus distributed practice on achievement and test anxiety were investigated using a quasi-experimental design employing 56 college students under two conditions. Test anxiety was assessed using Sarason's four-dimensional Reactions to Tests, while classroom achievement was measured on tests using multiple-choice applications. Experimental subjects were given four Reactions to Tests items and 10-item examinations on a weekly…
The Measurement of Preference for Course Structure and Preference for Course Difficulty
The development and psychometric characteristics of the Instructional Preferences Inventory, a measure of "classroom" personality, are described. This instrument was designed to measure preference for course structure (PCS) and preference for course difficulty (PCD). Statistical findings supported the instrument's reliability and factorial validity
Survey Return Rate and Size of School District
Returned surveys by superintendents ranged from 33 to 44% (over-all, 37% for 42 of 111). Size of district was noninfluential, unlike the effect of size of businesses
The Course Structure Inventory
The development and validation of the Course Structure Inventory (CSI), a measure of student attitude toward course structure and course difficulty, is described. A sample of 215 college students was given the CSI along with measures of arousal-seeking tendency, achievement motivation, and dogmatism. A significant negative correlation was found between scores on the arousal seeking measure and those on the attitude toward course structure subscal…
Procedures to Influence Levels of Questions Asked by Students
A study was conducted on the possibility of altering the levels of questions asked by students and the effects such an alteration would have on standardized measures of students' creative abilities. Twenty-four fifth-grade parochial students (Lorge-Thorndike IQs 108 to 134, X = 120.4) were administered Torrance's Thinking Creatively with Words (form b) prior to and after the experimental manipulation. Following baseline, the regular classroom ins…
Training Students to Utilize Adjunct Reading Aids
The possibility of training students to identify key words in essays relevant to objectives was examined. Subjects (N = 60) were assigned to four conditions: control, rapid feedback for key word identification, rapid feedback plus points toward a course grade for key word identification, and a points only condition. The results were analyzed in terms of the number of key words correctly identified (correct underlining), number of nonkey words ide…
First-Letter Mnemonics
A review of the first-letter mnemonic literature revealed inconsistent results and a series of interesting areas for additional study. The current study examined the effect on male and female Ss (N = 72) of first-letter mnemonics in five conditions, training plus S-generated mnemonics, training plus E-generated mnemonics, a replication of Bower's pegword system plus first-letter mnemonics, the pegword system alone, and a control condition. No fac…
Utility of the Nelson-Denny as a Predictor of Structure and Thematicity in Memory from Prose
The comprehension section of the Nelson-Denny reading test was administered to 84 undergraduate participants who then read an 1800-word passage and were required to write free-recall summaries of what they had read. Participants were separated into quartiles for the data analysis with comparisons made between the upper and lower quartiles. Significant differences between the upper and lower quartiles were observed for both structural and thematic…
