Contraceptive Knowledge among Females and Males Receiving Medication Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder Compared to Those Seeking Primary Care
Background Rates of unintended pregnancy among women receiving medication treatment for opioid use disorder (mOUD) are high, likely due in part to low rates of contraceptive use. Lack of knowledge about contraception may be contributing to inadequate contraceptive use. Objectives: To compare contraceptive knowledge among women and men receiving mOUD relative to a comparison group seeking primary care. Methods: We surveyed 332 reproductive-age wom…
Social Discounting and Cigarette Smoking During Pregnancy
In this study we examined the association between social discounting and smoking status in a cohort of pregnant cigarette smokers (n=91), quitters (n=27), or never-smokers (n=30). The smokers and quitters were participants in clinical trials on smoking cessation and relapse prevention, while the never-smokers were controls in a study on nicotine withdrawal during pregnancy. Social discounting was assessed using a paper and pencil task that assess…
Mass media and school interventions for cigarette smoking prevention
The long-term cigarette smoking prevention effects of mass media and school interventions were assessed. Adolescents in two communities received both mass media and school interventions; those in two matching communities received only school interventions. Surveys of 5458 students were conducted at baseline in grades 4 through 6 and 2 years after the 4-year interventions were completed, when students were in grades 10 through 12. Students exposed…
Prevention of cigarette smoking through mass media intervention and school programs
OBJECTIVES. In this study we tested the ability of mass media interventions to enhance the efficacy of school cigarette smoking prevention programs. METHODS. For 4 years, students in one pair of communities received media interventions and school programs that had common educational objectives. Students in a matched pair of communities received only the school programs. The combined cohort of 5458 students was surveyed at baseline in grades 4, 5,…
