Group-based physical activity trajectories in children transitioning from elementary to high school
While most children experienced a decline in physical activity as they transitioned into high school, some remained highly active and increased their level of physical activity. Future studies should test physical activity interventions for youth that are tailored for age-related trajectory groups
Moderating effect of the neighbourhood physical activity environment on the relation between psychosocial factors and physical activity in children
BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the moderating role of neighbourhood environments on the relation between psychosocial factors and physical activity, and results of these studies are mixed. This study examined this relationship in 636 fifth to seventh graders from South Carolina, USA. METHODS: From 2010 to 2013, children and their parent/guardian completed annual self-reported surveys assessing psychosocial factors, and children wore accele…
Associations Between Maternal Support and Physical Activity Among 5th Grade Students
Motor Skill Performance and Physical Activity in Preschool Children
Children with better‐developed motor skills may find it easier to be active and engage in more physical activity (PA) than those with less‐developed motor skills. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between motor skill performance and PA in preschool children. Participants were 80 three‐ and 118 four‐year‐old children. The Children's Activity and Movement in Preschool Study (CHAMPS) Motor Skill Protocol was used to assess pr…
Validation and Calibration of an Accelerometer in Preschool Children
Objective: Obesity rates in young children are increasing, and decreased physical activity is likely to be a major contributor to this trend. Studies of physical activity in young children are limited by the lack of valid and acceptable measures. The purpose of this study was to calibrate and validate the ActiGraph accelerometer for use with 3‐ to 5‐year‐old children. Research Methods and Procedures: Thirty preschool children wore an ActiGraph ac…
Conducting Accelerometer-Based Activity Assessments in Field-Based Research
PURPOSE: The purpose of this review is to address important methodological issues related to conducting accelerometer-based assessments of physical activity in free-living individuals. METHODS: We review the extant scientific literature for empirical information related to the following issues: product selection, number of accelerometers needed, placement of accelerometers, epoch length, and days of monitoring required to estimate habitual physic…
