  • Comparison of Millon Personality Profiles of Chronic Residential Substance Abusers and a General Outpatient Population

Open Access•Raymond J Yeager, Peter John Resweber et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1992

Several theories and studies have suggested that particular personality disorders or psychiatric symptoms should be associated with substance abuse. The current study was done to clarify these relationships by comparing scale profiles on the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory obtained by 144 inpatient residentially treated substance-abuse clients and 1000 general clinical outpatient clients in psychotherapy. A surprisingly large number of signi…

  • Elimination of Sat-Verbal Sex Differences Was Due to Policy-Guided Changes in Item Content

    Open Access•Diane E Alington, Russell C Leaf•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

The content of the SAT-Verbal varies over time due to policy-driven manipulations. For this reason, using SAT-Verbal scores to study historical patterns in cognitive sex differences is not recommended. For such a purpose one is better served by the chronometric tests developed within the framework of cognitive psychology

  • Placebo-Like Effects of Education about Rational-Emotive Therapy

    Open Access•Russell C Leaf, Amy K Todres et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1986

With the aid of course lectures, in-class group exercises, homework, and texts undergraduate students in abnormal psychology courses used Rational-Emotive Therapy simulations to treat problems in their own lives. The mental health of these students improved but that of untreated controls did not. The amount of improvement, in both groups, was predicted by the intensity of their pretest nonspecific emotional and social distress, but it was not a f…

  • Placebo-Like Effects of Education about Behavior Therapy

    Open Access•Russell C Leaf, Diane E Alington et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1985

To learn about behavior therapy, undergraduate students in abnormal psychology treated self-selected personal problems, with the aid of course lectures, homework, and texts. Target behavioral problems were usually alleviated, but success did not depend on whether recommended treatment methods were used. Self-ratings of project success were related to objective measures of improvement; but they were also related to factors associated with positive…

  • Recovery Time as a Measure of Degree of Conditioned Suppression

    Open Access•Russell C Leaf, Susan R P Leaf•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1966

The time period of complete cessation of drinking, after drinking is suppressed by presentation of a previously conditioned fear-eliciting CS, provides a one-trial test of CER magnitude. Suppression time is much longer after conditioning with a 10-sec. CS-US interval than after conditioning with longer CS-US intervals ( N = 66)

  • Effects of Shock Intensity, Deprivation, and Morphine in a Simple Approach-Avoidance Conflict Situation

    Open Access•Russell C Leaf, Stanley A Muller•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

The effects of water deprivation, shock level, and morphine on punishment-induced suppression of water drinking during a single conflict acquisition session were studied. Suppression of drinkometer-recorded licking was greatest with high levels of intermittent foot-shock for drinking, and suppression was reduced by morphine. Level of deprivation had no significant effect

  • Simple Method for CER Conditioning and Measurement

    Open Access•Russell C Leaf, Stanley A Muller•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

The effect of Pavlovian fear CSs on water drinking by thirsty rats was studied after fear conditioning with several procedures. Forward conditioning produced typical CER suppression of drinkometer-recorded licking, but backward conditioning and other Pavlovian control procedures did not. Effective CER suppression was demonstrated after 4 conditioning trials with a 1-trial test procedure. This is apparently the most simple and rapid technique avai…
