The Importance of Individual Differences in Pornography Use
This article reviews the extant literature regarding pornography's influence on antisocial attitudes, sexual arousal, and sexually aggressive behavior in both noncriminal and criminal samples. The article concludes that when examined in the context of multiple, interacting factors, the findings are highly consistent across experimental and nonexperimental studies and across differing populations in showing that pornography use can be a risk facto…
Pauvreté des liens d’attachement et déficiences dans les rapports intimes chez les agresseurs sexuels
The nature of parent/child attachments is described and their effects on adolescent and adult intimacy and loneliness are outlined. Poor quality attachments are said to result in loneliness and deficits in intimacy, and these, in turn, make the individual vulnerable to those influences and circumstances that lead to sexual offending. These processes are one of the most important sets of factors in our more general theory of the etiology and maint…
The Origins of Sexual Offending
This article proposes that the origins of sexual offending lie in the offender's experience of poor quality childhood relationships with their parents. This is said to increase their risk of being sexually abused, which in turn, feeds into the sexual fantasies they entertain, particularly during adolescence. The juvenile sexual history of sexual offenders involves high relative rates of masturbation, which becomes a preferred way of coping with s…
Improving the Effectiveness of Sexual Offender Treatment
The development of cognitive behavioral treatment programs for sexual offenders is outlined, and various issues concerning these treatments are appraised. Suggestions are made for modifying the extent of treatment, and some of the assumptions underlying present treatment are questioned. For example, the need to address all instances of offending and the relevance of planning and deviant fantasizing are considered, and the empirical bases for thes…

Attachment style in sex offenders
In the past few decades, a number of theories have been developed to further our understanding of the various aspects of sex offending. Recent work has been focused on the relationship between early interpersonal experiences and the presence of intimacy deficits in sex offenders. Marshall (1989, 1993, in press) developed an etiological model stressing the importance of insecure attachment and intimacy deficits in both the onset and maintenance of…

The use of sexually explicit stimuli by rapists, child molesters, and nonoffenders
Retrospective recall provided the basis for estimating the use of sexually explicit materials by sex offenders (voluntary outpatients) and nonoffenders during pubescence, as well as currently. Offenders were also asked about their use of such materials as incitors to offend. The sexual materials of concern were restricted to magazines, films, or videotapes depicting very explicit consenting sex between adults, a man forcing sex upon a woman, and …
Actual versus Predicted Expectancies and Their Influence in Flooding Therapy
24 snake-phobic undergraduate volunteers were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups, three flooding and one placebo. All subjects were provided rationales describing the treatment procedures in either positive, neutral, or negative terms, intended to induce differential expectancies for improvement. However, an analysis of expectancy scores at pre-treatment indicated that appropriate expectancies were not induced. Comparisons between …
