Radical contingency, radical historicity and the spread of ‘homosexualism’
Narrative evaluation in patient feedback
This study examines how patients use narratives to evaluate their experiences of healthcare services online. The analysis draws on corpus linguistic techniques, specifically annotation, applying Labov and Waletzky’s (1967) framework to a sample of online comments about the NHS in England. Narratives are pervasive in this context, being present more than absent in the patients’ comments, but are particularly prominent in comments which evaluate ca…

Monitoring agricultural diffuse pollution through a dense monitoring network in the River Eden Demonstration Test Catchment, Cumbria, UK
The water quality of our rivers and lakes is a reflection of the landscape over and through which it travels. The UK government, along with all European Union member states, are obliged under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) to aim for good ecological status of fresh water bodies by 2015. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of potential mitigation measures in reducing diffuse water pollution from agriculture at the catchment scale, the Demo…
Runoff attenuation features
There is evidence to suggest that modern rural land‐use management practices have led to increased runoff production at the farm scale. There are concerns that this may have contributed to downstream flooding of towns/villages, especially during intense local storm events. This paper presents an investigation into the potential attenuation of rural runoff through the application of soft‐engineered structures upstream of flood‐prone settlements, t…
American Military Misconduct in Shanghai and the Chinese Civil War
In September 1946, an American navy sailor killed a Chinese ricksha puller named Zang Dayaozi in a pointless dispute over an allegedly unpaid fare. The American military shielded the assailant from justice, with the frustrated acquiescence of the Nationalist authorities. This seemingly minor event illustrates that the century-old patterns of personal abuse and legal privilege did not completely evaporate when the “unequal treaty” system ended in …
The Amphibian Tree of Life
Nanking
Open Doors
On one level, this is an intriguing account of expat life in Shanghai's International settlement in the early 20th century. On another level is charted the introduction and growth of new western technologies and companies in China. And the backdrop to these stories is early 20th century China itself: the hopes, fears, turmoil and grandeur of the age
