Roger Williams and the Indian Business
Exploring Roger Williams business on the borderlands of New England is as central to explaining his life as his theological and political debates. As in other corners of Early America, Williams's daily activities involved regular and sustained interactions with his Indigenous neighbors in his home, trading business, and colonial politics

Between Power and Irrelevance is a well-researched work based on numerous interviews and published sources. Its focus, Transnational NGOs (TNGOs), allows the authors somewhat more perspective than the commonly used term International (INGOs).The book is well written, although sometimes overly dense and repetitive in its discussions of the challenges faced by Transnational NGOs.As a consultant for many of the TNGOs described in the book, I speciali…
Enhancing livelihoods of the urban poor through productive uses of utility-supplied water services – Evidence from Kampala, Uganda
Slums, one of the main faces of urban poverty, are escalating in Sub-Saharan countries and other developing countries. Achievement of the overly ambitious Sustainable Development Goals will require cross-sectoral interventions. A good example is the Multiple Use water Services (MUS) framework, a livelihood-centred approach that is implemented in rural areas of over twenty countries, where water supply primarily designed for domestic or irrigation…
Justice in a New World
Justice in a New World: Negotiating Legal Intelligibility in British, Iberian, and Indigenous America is a collection of essays that uses the lens of justice to study power struggles in the British and Iberian Americas. These authors agree that justice is multivalent, ranging from legal practices and their surrounding ceremonies to the beliefs central to a society. The laws themselves are equally works in progress, shaped by the dreams of distant…
Unveiling hidden knowledge
The provision of adequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services to ensure good health and wellbeing for all is incorporated into the Sustainable Development Goals, with the aim to ‘leave no-one behind’. The WASH needs of perimenopausal (PM) women are largely absent from academic literature.\nThese personal needs are hidden knowledge. However, this article demonstrates the use of participative methodologies to ‘unveil’ these. A UK-based ph…
Mainstreaming gender in the Wash sector
The way women’s issues have been conceptualised and acted on in the context of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) has changed over the past four decades. The discourses and trends in development studies – from the Women in Development approach of the 1970s to Gender and Development in the 1980s – were mirrored in the WASH sector. The WASH sector has contributed to, and been shaped by, debates on women’s needs and, latterly, on gender perspecti…

It aims to unravel the challenges and complexities of the double hermeneutic spiral associated with designing and doing this type of research in order to identify principles and processes appropriate to the engagement of all partners – in the community that provides the settin…

A key aspect of civil society worldwide is the emergence of thousands of nongovernmental organizations that operate on a global scale. The special challenges of organizing and managing these organizations include massive communications problems and the need to accommodate a wide diversity of interests. In this paper, we ask what kinds of organizational structures and management strategies are utilized by globally oriented nongovernmental organiza…
