  • Do volatilities in tourism arrivals and foreign aids matter for GDP volatility in Cambodia? Partial and vector coherence wavelet models

Open Access•Narasingha Das, Partha Gangopadhyay et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2024

The purpose of this research note is to investigate the nexus between volatility in international tourist arrivals, volatility in foreign aids and gross domestic product (GDP) volatility in Cambodia over the period of 1993–2018 by using partial and vector coherence wavelet models. The partial wavelet coherence models show that volatility in tourist arrival has strong impacts on GDP volatility across all time and frequency domains. Secondly, we fi…

    Open Access•Narasingha Das, Partha Gangopadhyay et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This study aims at assessing the impacts of green growth, in the form of adopting sustainable energy technologies and financing green projects, on environmental conditions in India. Thus, this study is important from the point of view of India's efforts in formulating strategies linked with achieving the environmental development targets enlisted under United Nations SDG‐13 declaration. In this regard, it is assumed that strategies targeted at es…

  • Estimating the Effects of Climate Shocks on Collective Violence

Partha Gangopadhyay, Rahul Nilakantan•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2018

This paper examines the causal relationship between climate shocks and collective violence in India using annual data over the period 1954–2006. We use the ARDL bounds testing approach to deal with problems of autocorrelation and non-stationarity of key variables. Rather than rainfall, we find that it is maximum temperature that has long and short run effects on collective violence, with unidirectional causality from temperature shocks to riots. …

  • Labour (im)mobility and monopsonistic exploitation of workers in the urban informal sector

    Open Access•Partha Gangopadhyay, Sriram Shankar•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 41

It is well-recognised in labour economics that employers in monopsonistic competition have market power to set wages below the productivity of workers if workers are immobile, which causes monopsonistic exploitation of workers. Monopsonistic exploitation is propelled by employers’ expectations about the degree of (im)mobility of workers and therefore by ex post mobility of workers. It hence begs a question of what determines the relative (im)mobi…

  • Are there any roles for social conformity and deviance in poverty? Insights from a field study on working poverty and educational investment in Bangladesh

Partha Gangopadhyay, Mustafa Abdul Rahman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2014•References: 15

In recent decades the Indian subcontinent has displayed remarkable invariance in the incidence of working poverty despite strong economic performance. It is widely held that education can rescue households from various types of poverty traps created by information problems and incorrect expectations. Yet we know very little about the motivation of the working poor in acquiring education. From a field study conducted in Bangladesh, we gain invalua…

  • Peace Science

    Partha Gangopadhyay, Manas Chatterji•EDITOR•BOOK•Peace science•2009

The process of globalisation has its own dynamics and several serious flaws that have resulted in significant economic, political and social imbalances in the global political economy. Peace Science: Theory and Cases examines the implications of these imbalances for achieving lasting global peace. The poorer regions of the current global system are beset with serious non-mutuality of interests, rivalry and potential conflicts over scarce resource…

  • Bargaining, Coalitions and Local Expenditure

    Open Access•Partha Gangopadhyay, Surinder Nath et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2001•References: 19

We extend the literature on local expenditure determination by showing that bargaining and grand coalition seem to facilitate collective decision-making in an assembly of elected councillors. We demonstrate that the solution of the game turns on the principle of equal relative concession. Based on limited experimentation, we assess the performance of local governments and find that group dominance frustrates local expenditure efficiency in urban …
