This article explores the synergies between translanguaging and feminist poststructuralism to deepen understandings of how educators can teach for justice. I highlight how both theories challenge dominant structures and boundaries; how they privilege process over product; and how they both illuminate non-dominant voices and experiences. I explore how both translanguaging and feminist poststructuralism have helped me challenge foundational epistem…
The Role of Religiousness on Substance-Use Disorder Treatment Outcomes
This study compares 41 Black and 124 White adolescents at intake and discharge from a residential treatment program for substance-use disorders. Study data were obtained as part of a larger study (N = 195) that sought to assess the relationship of helping behavior and addiction recovery. This post-hoc analysis aims to identify cultural strengths that may be associated with recovery from substance-use disorders among Black adolescents. Using regre…
Predictors of Membership in Alcoholics Anonymous in a Sample of Successfully Remitted Alcoholics
This study identifies factors associated with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) membership in a sample of 81 persons who have achieved at least one year of total abstinence from alcohol and other drugs. Forty-four were AA members, 37 were not. Logistic regression was used to test the cross-sectional associations of baseline demographic, substance-related, spiritual and religious, and personality variables with AA membership. Significant variables from th…
Keeping a ‘vigilant critique’
The practice of a critical pedagogy was the impetus for our involvement in an urban in‐district master’s program with a mission that included developing a ‘critical praxis’ for all participants. Early on we were challenged to rethink our stance as ‘critical educators’ when teachers resisted what we intended to be ‘empowering’ course practices, assigning readings written by teacher researchers. This resistance required us to question whether our p…

When a family member has a schizophrenic disorder
Viewing individuals with schizophrenic disorders within a family life-cycle context promotes recognition of the range of family roles, particularly partnership and parenting roles, in clients' lives. Knowledge of clients' stage of family development allows practitioners to view the client more holistically--as a family member with roles and responsibilities--instead of as an isolated, ill individual. Gender differences--in family roles and in man…
Causal attributions about mental illness
The relationship between causal attributions about mental illness and family functioning was investigated in 39 individuals with chronic mental illness and their families. Among parents and siblings, poor family functioning was associated with attribution to a person as the cause of the illness. Unexpectedly, no relationship was found between family functioning and causal attributions to genetics, biology, God, or chance
Implications of the Pre/Post/Then Design for Evaluating Social Group Work
Pre/post designs that rely on self-report measures are potentially contaminated by response shift bias, a change in respondents' understanding of the phenomena being measured between the pre- and posttests. Retrospective pretests, or then tests, have been shown to be useful in identifying response shifts. Pre/post/then designs are highly utilitarian designs that have the potential of providing more accurate assessments of respondent change. This …

An Analysis of the Implementation of Single-Case Evaluation by Practitioners
The adoption of single-case evaluation by practitioners is analyzed using the literature on the implementation of human service innovations. Factors associated with successful implementation are contrasted with efforts to implement single-case evaluation. Issues relevant to the innovation itself include the design process, the degree of development of the innovation, its adequacy and preparedness, and the user's costs and benefits. Knowledge of u…
