Family, Performativity and Justice in Early Modern Scotland
This article reconstructs the programme of public events led in Scotland over the course of 1579 by the widow and heir of John Stewart, fourth earl of Atholl, in an attempt to secure justice for his alleged death by poisoning. It argues that Margaret Fleming, the earl’s widow, chose a strategy of public performance, petitioning and spectacle to do this. The use of performance in this way is an overlooked means by which justice was sought within t…
Achieving elimination of soil-transmitted helminthiasis as a public health problem in Mali
Introduction Mali was endemic for soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH), mainly hookworms in the southern regions. Following baseline mapping, mass drug administration (MDA) for STH was integrated with MDA for schistosomiasis for school-aged children (SAC) or lymphatic filariasis (LF) for populations aged five and older and vitamin A supplementation for preschool children. Epidemiological evaluations were conducted to assess progress towards elimi…
Re-assessment of schistosomiasis in nine endemic districts with cluster sampling in Sierra Leone
Background Baseline mapping showed that schistosomiasis was highly/moderately endemic in nine districts in Sierra Leone. Mass drug administration (MDA) with praziquantel started in 2009, and after multiple rounds of treatment, an impact assessment was conducted in 2016 followed by a second re-assessment in 2022 using cluster sampling to provide more granular data for refining chiefdom (sub-district) treatment strategies. Methods On average, 20 ru…
Asian Educators Experiencing the Bamboo Ceiling
Our study amplifies the voices of Asian educators undergoing career advancement in a large district school board with a significant Asian student population in Ontario, Canada. Our data sources included survey results from 234 Asian educators and focus group transcriptions from 83 Asian educators. Grounded in Asian critical race theory (“AsianCrit”), our findings show that Asian educators faced the “bamboo ceiling,” wherein institutional barriers…

A Latin Renaissance in Reformation Scotland? Print Trends in Scottish Latin Literature, c . 1480–1700
The full extent of the large body of Latin literature produced by Scots in the early modern period has long eluded scholars. However, thanks to a growing range of research in this field, and particularly to the appearance of several major new bibliographic and electronic resources, it is possible for the first time to map out one aspect of its broad contours. This article uses a database comprising all currently known published first editions of …

Early Polemic by Andrew Melville
