The Role of Environmental Health Literacy When Developing Traffic Pollution Fact Sheets for Puerto Rican Adults
Environmental health literacy is particularly relevant to racial/ethnic and linguistic minority populations who are likely to live near major roadways and highways. We conducted exploratory research to develop ways to communicate the risks of traffic-related air pollution to Puerto Rican adults living in and near Boston, Massachusetts. We held two initial focus groups with Spanish-speaking Puerto Rican adults ( N = 16) enrolled in the Boston Puer…
Penitence, Preaching and the Coming of the Reformation
Why did the Reformation take root in some places and not others? Although many factors were involved, the varying character of penitential preaching across Europe in the decades prior to the Reformation was an especially important contributor to the subsequent receptivity of evangelical ideas. In this book, several collections of model sermons are studied to provide an overview of late medieval teaching on penitence. What emerges is a pattern of …
Penitence in the Age of Reformations
Ministry in the Margins
Thomas Swalwell, OSB (d. 1539), monk of Durham, left significant marginali in his many books. Well educated and reform minded, Swalwell's notes indicate his high expectations for the clergy. In addition, these notes suggest how he might have preached on this topic, using both the homily and the scholastic sermon style. Lollardy and Orthodox Religion in Pre-Reformation England
Learning to Worship in the Later Middle Ages
What's New in the History of Christianity
Current scholarship shows a growing commitment to study churches outside the West and to allow their histories to shape the way the overall narratives are told. New research, employing a range of methodologies, focuses on minority religious traditions and the complexities of lived religion
Medieval Sermons and Society
The twenty-one essays in this volume focus on medieval sermons and their relationship to the society they reflect and to the diverse audiences they address, broadly divided into three groups: cloister, city and university. The chronological range of the essays extends from the early to the late Middle Ages, touching on the major periods in the history of preaching: monastic texts for use within religious communities; the preaching of pilgrim-miss…
