Firms’ eco-innovation and Industry 4.0 technologies in urban and rural areas
We investigate the extent to which firms’ propensity to eco-innovate, adopt Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies and leverage them to eco-innovate varies with their location. We maintain that urban firms should be more prone to eco-innovate and adopt I4.0 technologies than rural ones, and more capable to make the latter functional to the former. Using a large sample of European firms, we test and confirm these hypotheses only partially. Firms in rura…
The political economy of public research, or why some governments commit to research more than others
Regional Technological Capabilities and the Access to H2020 Funds
This contribution provides fresh evidence on the factors facilitating the access to H2020 funds by EU regions focusing on the role played by pre‐existing technological endowments. The empirical analysis aims at assessing if, and the extent to which, the regional distribution of such resources strictly reflects the technological capabilities of regions (with the risk of a perpetuation or even a deepening of pre‐existing technological gaps) or, alt…

R&D profitability
This paper provides the first empirical attempt of linking firms’ profits and investment in R&D revisiting Knight’s (Risk, uncertainty and profit, Hart, Schaffner & Marx, Boston, 1921) distinction between uncertainty and risk. Along with the risky profit-maximising scenario, identifying a second, off-setting, unpredictable bias that leads to heterogeneous returns to R&D investments is crucial to fully understand the drivers of corporate profits. …
