Spatiotemporal Variation in Environmental Vibrio cholerae in an Estuary in Southern Coastal Ecuador
Cholera emergence is strongly linked to local environmental and ecological context. The 1991-2004 pandemic emerged in Perú and spread north into Ecuador's El Oro province, making this a key site for potential re-emergence. Machala, El Oro, is a port city of 250,000 inhabitants, near the Peruvian border. Many livelihoods depend on the estuarine system, from fishing for subsistence and trade, to domestic water use. In 2014, we conducted biweekly sa…
Blue Suede Shoes to Doc Marten Boots
This paper will focus on two seemingly disparate music based case studies-Elvis and punk rock-and their associated “religions.” An argument will be made that Elvis and “his religion” could be viewed as what is often represented as a traditional “Catholic” tradition with pilgrimages, flowers, candles, prayers and miracles (including resurrection). Ethics and charity work are undertaken as emulation or invocation of Elvis rather than a morally driv…
The components of resilience—Perceptions of an Australian rural community
Resilience, of individuals, is a well‐established concept in the psychology/mental health literatures, but has been little explored in relation to communities. Related theory in the community development and social impact assessment literature provides insight into qualities and assets of communities that enable them to develop effectively or to adapt to major changes. This article reports the components of community and individual resilience ide…
Postpartum Mothers' Disclosure of Abuse, Role, and Conflict
Experts evaluating evidence of the occurrence and effects of abuse before, during, and after pregnancy have called for research on the context within which violence occurs. This study elicited postpartum mothers' perceptions of roles and conflict in their abusive intimate relationships. Thirty newly delivered African-, Anglo-, and Hispanic-American abused mothers consented to be interviewed. While ethnicity, cultural norms, and economic issues fr…

His Truth Goes Marching On
Passing through the United States, from Nashville to Memphis, the traveller is made increasingly aware of the name of Elvis Presley and of the pilgrimage routes leading to his grave. From motel to museum Elvis’ name is emblazoned in lights and his image garlanded with flowers. This is Elvis Presley International Tribute Week and fans from all over the world are greeted on banners and in shop front displays. They gather in cafes and hotels; they t…

Some lesser‐known victims of totalitarian persecution
The persecution of Christian sects such as Jehovah's Witnesses and Seventh Day Adventists in totalitarian societies is a neglected subject. In Hitler's Germany, some refused to compromise and suffered the fate of Jews, Gypsies and homosexuals. Others were tempted to buy a stay of execution and publicly adopted elements of national‐socialist ideology
Strategies for Survival
When in January 1933 the National Socialist Party took power in Germany, it set out to put into practice its principles and political aims. On the question of religion, there was a certain amount of ambivalence. Hitler himself had been brought up as a Catholic and expressed some theoretical toleration for the Churches. A leading party theorist, Alfred Rosenberg, however, had in his The Myth of the Twentieth Century attacked Christianity, and inhe…
