  • Der Rheinische Kapitalismus in der Ära Adenauer

    Marcel Boldorf•ARTICLE•German History•2017

Rhenish capitalism was a historical phenomenon between the end of World War II and the German unification, a period that has recently been called the Bonn Republic. In many respects, Rhenish capitalism meant a rupture with National Socialism because it was characterized by principles of democratization, decentralization, decartelization and deregulation which were imposed by the Allies after German surrendered in 1945. However, there were also el…

  • France's Occupation Costs and the War in the East

Open Access•Marcel Boldorf, Jonas Scherner•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2012•Cited by: 2

This article analyses how Nazi Germany exploited France, which – from an economic point of view – was the most important occupied country during the Second World War. We can show that, in contrast to the conventional wisdom, there was no clear-cut caesura in Germany’s policy of exploiting occupied France – not in the extent of the exploitation in real terms or in the kind of policy toward occupation funds. Although the war in the East and prepara…

This article explores the concept of industrial districts and outlines how they can be applied to economic history. The methodological debate centres around Italy, Spain, France, French-speaking Switzerland and the USA, and focuses on: the impact of institutional arrangements at the beginning of industrial development; co-operation between small and medium-sized firms in joining regional networks; the existence of governance structures in place t…

After World War II, a major part of the business elite managed to flee from the Soviet Occupation zone. Thus, in the period of trusteeship that followed, the volume of personnel changes remained rather low. In April 1948, when the industrial sector was finally nationalised, the SED reinforced personnel changes again. Key positions which dealt with the workforce were taken over by party members, whereas former engineers often succeeded in keeping …

This article explores the similarities and differences in the persecution of economic elites in Germany and the occupied countries after the war. The shift of power after the liberation deeply influenced the process by which national elites were formed. However, below the highest ranks of administration and business, a remarkable continuity among the industrial managers and entrepreneurs can be discerned. At the local level, the persecution of el…

  • Grenzen des nationalsozialistischen Zugriffs auf Frankreichs Kolonialimporte (1940–1942)

    Marcel Boldorf•ARTICLE•Vierteljahrschrift für Sozial-…•2010•Cited by: 1

After the occupation of France, the Reich Economics Ministry planned to seize French colonial resources on a large scale. Following the Wiesbaden negotiations, the defeated enemy should be forced to deliver goods and material in order to supply the German war economy. This article examines the examples of West African plant oils and Indochinese natural rubber. As a consequence of principle-agent conflicts, the German occupiers could not reach the…

  • Brüche oder Kontinuitäten? Von der Entnazifizierung zur Stalinisierung in der SBZ/DDR (1945 1952)Ruptures or Continuities? From Denazification to Stalinisation in East Germany, 1945 1952

    Open Access•Marcel Boldorf•ARTICLE•Historische Zeitschrift•2009
