  • Remedies for a Prince with a Nosebleed

    Open Access•Krisztián Simkó•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und…•2024

K 1452, a previously unpublished tablet from the Kouyunjik Collection in the British Museum, contains pharmaceutical remedies and incantations against nasal haemorrhage. The format of this tablet suggests that it was prepared for practical purposes. Neo-Assyrian medical letters offer the closest parallels in Nineveh, and two of them, SAA 10, 321 and 322, record remedies for a prince suffering from a heavy nosebleed. The former letter also mention…

  • A Chain of Amulet Stones against Throbbing Headache

    Krisztián Simkó•ARTICLE•Die Welt des Orients•2021

This paper focuses on a chain amulet from Mesopotamia, which has so far been known from the two largely unedited tablets K 4727+ and Sm 1071. Due to the fragmentary state of these sources, several questions have remained unanswered, pertaining to aspects like the exact number and type of raw materials needed to create this particular chain. Only parts of the stone list are preserved in both texts, which did not allow a complete reconstruction of …

    Open Access•Krisztián Simkó, András Bácskay•ARTICLE•Iraq•2021

Building on recent advances in the field of Neo- and Late Babylonian medicine, this paper presents the edition and thorough analysis of two unpublished medical tablets from the collections of the British Museum (BM 30918 and BM 31071). In the first part, the archival and social context of these tablets will be explored, while also reporting on findings about how they might fit into the larger corpus of Late Babylonian medical texts. The two table…

  • Das Schilfrohr umherspringen lassen”

    Krisztián Simkó•ARTICLE•Journal of Cuneiform Studies•2020

In spite of extensive research conducted in the field, there are some areas of Babylonian reed industries that have eluded understanding since the first comprehensive overview was published on this topic in 1989. The aim of this communication is to provide some insights into one such area, the preparation of pliable reed strands. On the basis of partly overlooked philological evidence, it will be argued that phrases like gi gu4- ud, na4 ad-KID, a…

  • The Magical Potential of Stones Used for Cylinder Seals

    Open Access•Krisztián Simkó•ARTICLE•Iraq•2015

Besides their significance in administrative procedures, cylinder seals also played an important role as amulets in ancient Mesopotamia. There are many references to them being used in medical and magical procedures, which sometimes determine their features of magical potential. Thus not only the imagery and inscription of cylinder seals but also the raw material of which they were made contributed to their medico-magical usage (cf. Collon 1987: …
