Hobbes, Taylor, and Locke’s View of Toleration in the 1660s
Hobbes scholars have shown the relevance of Hobbes for Locke’s view of toleration in the 1660s. However, Hobbes’s position on toleration has been shown to be close to that of the Episcopalian tolerationist Jeremy Taylor. Thus, I reconsider Locke’s “Hobbesian” ideas on toleration in view of Taylor. Some of Locke’s ideas in the English Tract that have been characterized as Hobbesian can also be found in Taylor. Moreover, Taylor’s argument was close…
Taylor and Hobbes on toleration
The English Revolution saw fierce controversy over religious toleration. While this controversy was usually associated with parliamentarians and Puritans, major contributions to the debate were also made by a few thinkers from the royalist side: Jeremy Taylor and Thomas Hobbes. Despite their prominence in the toleration debate, however, the intellectual context of the English Revolution in which their distinctive views of toleration were formed r…
Hobbes's Eschatology and Scriptural Interpretation in Leviathan
Hobbes's eschatology in Leviathan is one of the most striking aspects of this classic work and has received considerable scholarly attention. Nevertheless, its scriptural interpretation has rarely been examined. This article closely analyses Hobbes's scriptural case for two aspects of eschatology: the doctrine of mortalism and the terrestrial kingdom of God. It shows that, to a large extent, Hobbes's biblical exegesis for these two eschatological…
Hobbes on the supernatural from The Elements of Law to Leviathan
Hobbes's unusual religious views in his classical work, Leviathan, are often seen as a product of his attempt to reconcile Christianity with his philosophical materialism. Yet given Hobbes's materialistic view in his earlier works too, this explanatory framework alone is not sufficient for grasping distinctive features of Leviathan. This article remedies this lacuna by paying close attention to an understudied aspect of the development of Hobbes'…
Hematological and Biochemical Data Obtained in Rural Northern Uganda
Reference intervals for common hematological and clinical chemistry parameters constitute an important basis for health care. Moreover, with increasing priority in drug and vaccine development for infectious diseases in Africa, the first priority is the safety evaluation and tolerability of the candidate interventions in healthy populations. To accurately assess health status and address adverse events, clinical reference intervals in the target …
