The evidence concerning the appointment of a successor to Archbishop Winchelsey in 1313 is here brought together, using especially the surviving manuscript material in the archive of the dean and chapter of Canterbury and a secret letter from Clement V to Edward II which led to the papal appointment of the king's confidant and royal chancellor Walter Reynolds.
