  • How many traffic fatalities can be attributed to cannabis each year in the US

    Open Access•Michael A White•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2026

Kamer and Warshafsky (IJDP, 2026, 148, Article 105110) have estimated that the recent use of cannabis by US drivers contributes about 5000 deaths per year to the road toll. Part 1 of this Commentary describes the mathematics of the estimation equations. Two clear errors in Kamer and Warshafsky's estimations are identified in Part 2. When corrected, the predicted annual number of cannabis-attributed traffic fatalities falls from about 5000 to abou…

  • KSR1 and EPHB4 Regulate Myc and PGC1β To Promote Survival of Human Colon Tumors

Open Access•Sebastià Sarasa Urdiola, Jamie L McCall et al.•ARTICLE•Molecular and Cellular Biology•2016

Identification and characterization of survival pathways active in tumor cells but absent in normal tissues provide opportunities to develop effective anticancer therapies with reduced toxicity to the patient. We show here that, like kinase suppressor of Ras 1 (KSR1), EPH (erythropoietin-producing hepatocellular carcinoma) receptor B4 (EPHB4) is aberrantly overexpressed in human colon tumor cell lines and selectively required for their survival. …

  • Climate adaptation wedges

    Open Access•Noah S Diffenbaugh, Michael A White et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2011

Design and implementation of effective climate change adaptation activities requires quantitative assessment of the impacts that are likely to occur without adaptation, as well as the fraction of impact that can be avoided through each activity. Here we present a quantitative framework inspired by the greenhouse gas stabilization wedges of Pacala and Socolow. In our proposed framework, the damage avoided by each adaptation activity creates an 'ad…

  • Global warming presents new challenges for maize pest management

    Open Access•Noah S Diffenbaugh, Christian H Krupke et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2008

It has been conjectured that global warming will increase the prevalence of insect pests in many agro-ecosystems. In this paper, we quantitatively assess four of the key pests of maize, one of the most important systems in North American grain production. Using empirically generated estimates of pest overwintering thresholds and degree-day requirements, along with climate change projections from a high-resolution climate model, we project potenti…

  • Your study of the things would be valuable

    M White, Michael A White•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2001

In the early 1920s the Revd Charles Elliot Fox of the Melanesian Mission collected approximately 200 items from San Cristobal in the Solomon Islands for the Otago Museum, Dunedin, New Zealand. He did so at the request of the Museum's first and recently appointed anthropologist, Henry Devenish Skinner. The value of the collection is enhanced by a commentary from Ben Monongai, of Heuru, San Cristobal, dating from 1923. This article looks at the com…
