The De-territorialization on Egypt’s Desert Cities
This article examines the application of ideas around the ‘de-territorialisation’ of cities in the global South to new desert cities surrounding Cairo, Egypt. It also responds to the call for ‘engaged theory-making’ by working with a local community development organisation on a case study of Sixth of October City (SOC), a new city in Cairo’s desert hinterland. Drawing on interview data, the article argues that a certain form of Western-inspired …
This is us
In this empirical study, we describe how Muslim female school leaders prioritise equity, community, and resistance when leading American Islamic schools. Similar to prior critical feminist studies, this research centres female leaders’ agency as an emancipatory praxis of resistance to injustice and oppression, aligned with our core assumptions of Islamic feminism. Through our analysis of thirteen interviews and our own collaborative autoethnograp…
Environmental Justice and Resilience in the Urban Global South
There has been a profusion of work since the turn of the last century exploring environmental justice in urban areas and resilience in cities of the Global South. These works have largely entailed the assumption of an a priori positive relationship between the two. In introducing this volume, we argue that a case-study approach based on empirical research is necessary in order to reveal the more complex ways in which the relationship between envi…
Urban Resilience and Justice
The conclusion reflects on the theoretical, conceptual, methodological and empirical breadth of the contributing chapters and returns to the question outlined at the beginning of the book: what is the relationship, emerging connections and tensions between environmental justice and resilience in urban areas of the Global South? As explored throughout the chapters, in the face of environmental injustices, people develop survival strategies to cope…
NoBanNoWall
In a trumping era, White nationalism has taken center political stage in the White House and Congressional leadership, infiltrating hatred and fear in community and school spaces. Thus, there is a need for a new kind of education, one that uses Anzaldúa’s Borderlands consciousness as an approach to practicing hooks’ love ethic. This work examines the possibilities this new education philosophy may have through the testimonios of two Borderlands s…
Teacher-Advocates Respond to Essa
Although researchers consider them powerful, teacher policy advocates are among the least studied stakeholders in U.S. public education reform today. Although plenty of attention has been given to the impact of policy on teachers' work, little research explores how teachers interpret or interact with policy. Drawing on the work of Spillane, Reiser, and Reimer (2002) on teachers' policy implementation and Coburn's (2001) work on teachers' collecti…
Resilience in Palestinian adolescents living in Gaza
These findings indicate that older age, optimism, perception of family seeing the world as comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful, stronger Arab ethnic identity, greater self-regulation and stronger coping skills promote adolescent adaptation and health. Salutogenesis frames information about how resilient youth living in high threat environments may respond to preventative community-based behavioral health interventions as well as treatment …
